I recently bought one silver coin (German from year 1913) This coin has a beautiful and strong luster, but it also has a lot of quite long micro scratches Most of the scratches are in one direction and they are visible only under the light and specific angle What could be origin of those scratches considering that the luster is well-preserved? Comment from : @markm9731 |

Uhmm I don’t fully agreed , specially circulated old coins , I own a few graded coins that displayed what you just mentioned , but neither PCGS or NGC has labeled them as cleaned These deposits are normal on circulated coins, people touching them , the high spots will appear clean , and on the lower spots grime , discoloration will find their way There must be a protocol these grading companies follow to give the grade of “ Cleaned coin” Comment from : @EivinSukoi |

I had such a difficult time understanding why the value of the coin decreases after a cleaning? If you can get the crud, dirt, debris off it and the integrity of the metal isn't compromised, why does it loose value? Personally I would want the coin clean so I can see all the detail It's like an old car not being washed It's still an old car IDK I know in the collecting world now not to clean coins but whatever lol Comment from : @neophytestacker9471 |
Thanks Comment from : @mikewright9285 |
