Pardon the noob here, but one of the ways we learn is to ask questions I hope this question isn't one that gets me put down or treated with disrespect, but I will ask it anyway and hope for the best :) Why does cleaning matter? I would assume cleaning didn't reduce the amount of silver in the coin, when coins come from a mint are they not clean prior to shipping them? I am just starting a small collection and I am was about ready to order around $60000 in coins on eBay, now I am wondering if I should pause first

I'm colorblind so the color tip doesn't help me I can clearly see the difference between the white lustrous silver dollar and the dark shiny one I have to judge based on the surface condition and luster or heaven forbid - hairlines

I'd describe cleaned coins as having a dark grey appearance from most angles of light Sitting coins down on a table together and walking around the table from a distance and looking at them from many angles can easily reveal such coins ETA: Good video here One of the first mentions was how flat the fields of the cleaned coin look which is one of the best ways to tell There are a few videos here on YouTube trying to help people identify cleaned coins which were giving out very squirrelly advice, this is not one of them The depth of uncleaned coins can vary tremendously but even the flatter fields will still look frosty Deeper fields will look dark but the luster bands will be strong as well, very unlike the cleaned counterparts All assuming we're talking about uncirculated coins of course

Hi Ben, Thanks for the vid I would like to know why some silver coins that havent been cleaned are blast white (more common in Morgans and Peace dollars) while others show a darker color (more common in Capped Bust Halves, Barbers, etc) Could you do a vid on this subject? Thanks
