I enjoyed your video I may have a remedy to the love-hate relationship you and some of your viewers have with the disc cutter needed to make these rings Annealing the coin prior to cutting the shank hole, using a lubricant on the cutting edge of your cutting dies, countering the angle of the plate the coin creates by placing a shim between the plates opposite the coin, and finally by *scoring a line prior to punching will not only go a long way in preserving the functionality of your disc cutter by reducing the physical force needed to cut the coin, but by also significantly reducing the time to repair or clean up rough cuts from aggressive cutting techniques creates ( :br* Scoring: The taper at the top of your dies is there for this purpose Prior to "punching" out a hole score the coin first Using a weighted chasing hammer a 1# or lighter basic tool chest hammer would be fine, and taking care to not allow the die to jump around, deliver solid strikes to the angled edge at around the top of the die Doing so will score your coin and create a channel guide for the die to follow when you strike the top of the die to "punch" the shank hole brHarbor Freight tools often get a bad wrap I've been a metalsmith for going of 20 years and although I have all the industry "recommended" tools of the trade many of my go-to tools on my bench are from Harbor Freight I also recommend HF tools to beginners when I teach Using any tool, including those from Harbor Freight, as the manufacturer recommends; that along side a bit research on trade techniques will no doubt make the project more enjoyable for yourself and insure your tools will have a long, productive & happy life in your studio Peace!! I'm retired draftsman Just get a Staedtler or other clear circle guide on Amazon Now use it to draw a circle the size of your coin (quarter is 15/16 inch for example) Make sure to also mark the four 90 degree markers shown on the template Draw a line through the 90 degree marks (horizontal and vertical) Place your coin in this circle Lay the template on top of the coin using the hole size you want Line up the four marked corners of the smaller circle on the template Use the Sharpie to trace the circle onto the coin In 10 seconds or less you are done and the hole is centered perfect Can use for any size coin you find Comment from : @ralphhross |
