I do a lot of change management this is right on point Sometimes those who buy into the status quo don't even really benefit from it Regardless, there is still a sense of ownership because they were either part of the process that built it, or have red light on it so long it has become somewhat of their identity, especially if they are in an administrative or operational role that is defined by that status quo process or bureaucracy There is a real sense of ownership an identity that must be contended with also

Sometimes people don't want the status quo to change because the proposed alternative is going to ruin their way of life People aren't just opposed to change because they "benefit" from the status quo Things are likely stable for them and the change that's being proposed is obviously going to make things worse, or they simply know it's won't help them at all No chance of making their life better, so why put effort into a change that won't make things better for them The only possibility is for things to stay the same for them or to get worse
