Based on personal experience, I would say the better option is investing in Index funds in 401k due to lower fees Large, Mid-Cap, Small, International and Bond If you want to be more aggressive, replace Bond with REIT and Company Stock

Skip the target date funds due to expense ratios Find the SP500 Index equivalent and pick that If you're young, you can split some off into a large cap growth option and call it a day Target date funds will take a lot of your money just to move money over to bonds over time

This isn't bad advice, but I wouldn't dismiss options for growth or total market funds if you are young The returns are generally better and the expense ratio is usually lower

Trash advice!brThis is not financial advice but the s&p has a 10 annual average return over the last 50-100 yrs A target option will put your money into cds and bonds the older you get that might get you a 4 return at best You will be alot richer doing some research and finding good stock index funds
