I was always a terrible student and wound up doing a variety of retail jobs Decided at 41 to become a nurse went to community college and became an RN I’m retired now but I enjoyed doing work that helped people for the rest of my working life

It's easy enough to find out the educational choices they make with their own kids I'm willing to bet the overwhelming majority of them send their kids off to the very thing they criticize They want it for their kids, but not so much for you It makes it way easier for them to lie to you as well

I have a niece and a nephew that have both completed their four year university degrees in the last three years Both are very lucky to have no debt, since their parents were capable of paying out over $200K on their behalf Both were lucky enough to find employment within six months after completing their education Both are doing jobs that have nothing to do with the degrees they studied for and achieved Both were trained for their current positions by their new employer Both are earning about $10 per hour above the minimum wage I asked them both a simple question; "Is there anything in your current job, that you could not be doing with a high school diploma and your employer's training?" The answer was a clear, "NO"

I went to college, I made it 2&1/2 years, I had to drop out because of funding! The whole time I was working construction, trim carpentry! My dad had been doing it since he was 16, I have as well! Even during college I worked with my dad I'm now 38 and I'm still doing trim carpentry I'm stuck with $15,000 worth of student loan debt that I will NEVER pay back I will be a proud trim carpenter til I die I'm okay with that because I have pride in my work, I work outside with my hands and I can see the end result of my work in the thank yous of the homeowners and builders My dad taught me well College is a ripoff unless you're going to be a doctor, scientist, lawyer, etc Learn a trade instead People will always need homes to live in

The government schools work hand-in-glove with the universities to keep a constant influx of new tuition payers every year Government guaranteeing student loans is just a way to keep the money flowing into universities Frankly, it's nothing but a gigantic fraud perpetrated on the American taxpayers by the government for the benefit of the universities

I was an academic bum I have 9 bachelors, 5 masters and 3 unfinished doctorates Most of those degrees are in STEM fields I enjoyed learning things although, today, you couldn't pay me enough to go to what passes as a "school" Most of the academic knowledge I have has had no employment uses for the last 3 decades although bits and pieces of knowledge have come in handy at the strangest times and places The blue collar skills have, even as I served as a church pastor Sadly, the knowledge gained from my first job (with a fence company) has come in handy as well I am sorry to say that jackhammer technology has not significantly improved since 1979!

Left out of this conversation is income Very few jobs that are trade jobs offer the same compensation as degree jobs and that ratio hasn't slipped much at all The other unmentioned fact here is a lot of those dirty jobs destroy your body long before retirement So even if you do get to one of the ones that pays great, your physical shape by 50 may be such a disaster that you have to find another job fast because you just can't do that dirty job anymore

I tried college twice, hated classes, dropped out both times, became a depressed drug addict, pizza delivery driver, found out i loved driving LOOOOVED driving Plan is to go to truck driving school Coulda saved a lot of time and crap if I'd known that early on But I had very high ACT and SAT scores so everyone thought I needed to go to college

I retired at age 55 from a job that did not require a degree I was a nuclear reactor operator My employer provided the training, so much so that it was worth 50 college credits I have no college or any other kind of debt in retirement
