I just got this and while I haven't taken the time to get the line out running, it has me picking up my electric a lot more knowing that I can get a good sound without too much knob-fiddling and pissing off my roommate Comment from : @GuitarQueero1 |
Bought a thr when they first came out Use it everyday I record with it all the time Put a 57 on the grill Easy cleans are great Add a drive in front if you want In a track it sounds perfect Comment from : @brooklynboy1000 |

Came across your video a bit late Great video!brI have a THR30 as well Actually I have two Yamaha THR, since I started with the basic THR10 which doesn't have battery or wirelessbrWanted to add that these are indeed also a great pedal platform when dialed in appropriately Basically Clean channel with Master to 100, Gain to taste (about 9-10 o'clock in my case) and Guitar to tune the actual volume, no effects Since I have two, and the last pedals on my board are stereo, I run one side to the THR30 and the other to the THR10 Glorious! Comment from : @wimjacobs4075 |
They don't sound better That's impossible but i think given it's size and price, it sounds good for home use Comment from : @donarmando916 |
So boring Get a better editor Comment from : @dougfoster4494 |
Love my THR30ii, use it every day! Two features that would improve its functionality hugely : Make it wireless headphone compatible and put in an effects loop !!! Comment from : @5geezers |
Great video as always, can someone tell me what was the first song Mike played? Comment from : @pabloferreres6716 |

Good for children Comment from : @Thelma-q3v |

Not for a metal thought Comment from : @jer0n1986 |
I have the THR30II and the THR5a, I genuinely only use these amps now and don’t use my main amps anymore I’ve used the 30II as a PA for around 130 people, I’ve also used the 5a to lead worship… those babies are awesome! I can’t recommend these enough Say goodbye to your pedal boards ( if you want to), they are that good Comment from : @IraqVet0608 |
Video starts at 4:30 Comment from : @Steve_Rotter |
I definitely feel that time passing part Comment from : @followerofchristofthetrini1692 |
Another great video Thank you for bringing us into your world Comment from : @GreenmanWood |

Can you scoot back a little bit please Comment from : @Chubbynoodle-cz2nt |

I'm in between Spark 2 and THR30II In general, I like the tones of THR30II better, I think their partnership with Line6 gives them an edge On the other hand, Spark 2 seems to be coming with some interesting features like AI modeler (you just type a prompt and it finds you a tone) and built in Looper I'm not much into looping, but I need a simple looper at least, so definitely a plus for Spark 2 It seems difficult to work with classic loopers with these desktop amps, but I also found out a special looper was recently released for these by XSonic, which connects via USB, so that is interesting In the end I am super undecided lolbrbrNow that I think about it, I have a Mighty Space, which has all these features(looper, drum track, wireless dongle etc), but in general its modelling is pretty on the weak side, which is a shame Comment from : @ArdaKaraduman |
Uniquely informative and hilarious Comment from : @DNYS8N |
I got the previous one and I love it so much! Comment from : @theseptembersessions_music |
Mike ! You are a good story teller Comment from : @MrDees_music |
I like that you can play bass and acoustic through it This thing does everything Comment from : @jbencinitas |
Hello Mike, Thank you for bring back the Yamaha THR and it's purpose I still own my THR for that reason, we use it in lounge room jamming, perfect for acoustic, electric or bass big thumbs up Sound Quality as you know is impressive compared to other similar products But the problem here in Australia the price! Why too much nearly $1000? Please Yamaha drop your retail price by half by subsidising the sell price of boat engines and motorcycles, Muso's can't afford the asking price Comment from : @AussieCornerStudio |
the volume is seriously LOWGood stuff in the VidBlessings to you Comment from : @scottmpence1058 |
I got my thr like 2 or 3 years ago and it's so dope My band usually practices in my school's practice rooms, and I play at my church semi-regularly, and like for an amp I can just carry with me from home it's really sweet Especially cause I hate lugging around pedals and stuff, it's made like being organised for sessions way easier Also I've gotten compliments from girls on it so that's an added bonus Comment from : @michaelebenezer8730 |
While the clean tones sounded really good, the lead tones sounded like crap I own a katana 50 and 100 and love them They sound great and are very versatile Of course they are bigger than those practice amps but I personally have not found one „practice amp“ that sounded convincing to me I don’t see the point in those Comment from : @nicolaskotseronis |
Of course that amp is cool af, it’s Bocchi’s practice amp anyway 😏 Comment from : @wreckedsun |
When the Spark was a thing and everyone was waiting for it to finally arrive, I also waited and couldn't anymore, so I bought a THRII10 for the same price just to have something to play with until the "great" Spark arrived and I could sell the THR off againbrThe Spark arrived a month later I was happy I could sell it for a good price just a week later, before the used prices for it went southbrThe THR is it's own league Comment from : @ssm445 |
I have it, and it´s much more than a practice amp This little guy is ready for stage Plugging it in to the PA and it sounds great I dont need more Comment from : @martinspreiter8240 |
I have a Yamaha THR10 and the tones I can get from it are unbelieveable, better than amps I've gigged with Comment from : @sledge1960 |
so can it connect to pedals, and dose it work well with pedals? Comment from : @798beer |
I gig with my THR, It's great Comment from : @ReeseMusic42 |
Amen 🙏 Comment from : @joeylodes |
I just bought the same amp you showed I have not done much with yet but I like the amp My idea was to try to use it small gigs plugged into the PA do you think that would be practical? I am not pro musician but can play slide blues guitar Comment from : @paulpapadelta7994 |
Practice amps are great I have the Spark GO which is a tiny portable amp that I love using, especially while traveling The app is also quite intuitive brbrAnd the Boss Kitana 100 It has a 5 watt setting which is ideal if you're living in an apartment Comment from : @ratedrrr |
I have a THR10 and a ToneKing Imperial I have to say I much prefer the THR Comment from : @crossroadbluessecrets |
Just started guitar under 2 years ago, so I have a LOT of practicing to do before I start busking or gigging Love the THR30II for practice and I'll likely use it for busking as well I connected an Xionic Airstep Lite BT foot pedal which controls the THR30II or my Spark mini or my Boss WAZA-AIR headphones Easy to toggle between the amps It is a great setup Comment from : @vincemarco |
I tried a lot of small desktop amps The THR30ii was simply the most musical sounding one All the others sounded like each other Comment from : @keegsmarshall6610 |
you say real amps and you mention toys, some toys sound worst than others great conclusion Comment from : @yaniv-nos-tubes |
Katana is okay But I have just bought a Marshall DSL 1, with a one 12 inch Marshall cabinet with one Greenback in it It's some of the best I have heard, since I sold my 5 watt Tube amp It can even be attenuated down to o2 watt I think what I try to say, is get a little tube amp Vox or Marshall, and you will get the best tones Katana is okay, but a tube amp simply sound better Thanks for the video I have a THR Yamaha too, and it's one of the best small practice ampsBut tubes rule Comment from : @nevigo5519 |
I know I'm late with this comment but this is a really well put together story I realise you like to get existential and live in your own head sometimes (that is sarcasm BTW) but the front story was very important to this tale I'm very much a beginner (HeyI can play most chordsLOL) and a senior to boot, but I'm a huge fan of Yamaha audio equipment so I would expect the pro stuff to be built just as well I have Yamaha stuff dating back to 1980 ( a CR-2040 receiver dating back to the tail end of the "Receiver Wars") that hasn't missed a step so I would expect that particular amp to outlive mebrAgainjust a really enjoyable video Kudos' to you Mike Comment from : @normwetherbee3403 |
Hi Mike, have you taken this amp gonna a test drive with an electric acoustic, if not could you please? Comment from : @michaelk4865 |
I have the white THR 30, sounds awesome! I was surprised how good the acoustic setting sounded Comment from : @VicB325 |
I own a THR30 and I really like it for its versatility and simplicity The built-in speakers lack some bottom end, so it sounds a little bit thin And I have some wishes for the next generation of THRs like a looper, foot switch or an effects loop But overall this is still my favorite practice amp on the market And it‘s already an iconic design Comment from : @dietmarschuller3963 |
Gotta say great videoI love the format and the way you have everything structured Keep up the good work! Comment from : @icemann155 |
I like this amp It reminds me of my old Roland Microcube I think I'll get one, one of these days Comment from : @gilbertotoledo1421 |
I actually used a THR10X for gigging when I was first starting out believe it or not It might have been small, but it could pump out some serious tone! One venue I played at literally just mic’d it and it sounded incredible If anything, Yamaha always makes good gear no matter the price! Comment from : @pjnibbelin |
I have owned several Yamaha THR amps, currently I own the THR30ii wireless, a thought has any one tried to get the rockman sound out of it The sound of the 80’s I haven’t tried as it is a heavily compressed sound and currently I don’t own a compressor just thought maybe someone gave this a shout Comment from : @reggiepope2558 |
Good job Comment from : @reggiepope2558 |
The fact that you can use electric, acoustic, and bass guitar with this is so good And mic but not sure about that Comment from : @QWRTkeyboard |
Got a THR10X after watching a bunch of Cameron Cooper's videos Got it around the time the 30 came out Really weighed the options and came to the personal, tinfoil hat, answer in that 'once the internal battery on the new yamahas starts to sag and charge less, it's worthless' So 8 rechargeable AA batteries was the better option for me Great mobile practice platform for sure Plus, with a few extra cords from amazon you get the same app tethered functionality of the newer models Comment from : @Grt31pmkin |
The 30 amp Comment from : @randalwilder6666 |
I have a THR 10C and I love it The sounds are surprisingly great, and the variety is fun I bought a demo with no software so I haven't recorded with it I am looking to maybe get a Positive Grid Spark Cab and play out with it Mine is the "Classic Rock" version but you can get other types of the older models used and the new ones also sound great The wireless option with more wattage is pretty tempting Comment from : @bigdeadlizard |
I will never buy myself one of these Yamaha THR "amps" again Comment from : @MartyMartin87 |
Bro, if you like Radio Head, you are gonna really like Pink Floyd once you get into them, They are the last of the psychedelic bands David Gilmore's playing is so soulful Comment from : @ronroberson |
Bro, first let me say I really enjoy your channel and your playing is awesome Its so informative, and we guitar geeks cant get enough talking about and collecting gear, So big thanks for sharing all this cool stuff I recently got a Yamaha THR amp, the first gen version, Im loving it I also have a Marshall Code 50, and a Fender Mustang II, Im a classic rocker thanks again, Ron Comment from : @ronroberson |
I have one tooand till now all records I recorded was with that thing Great amp! Its just have some issues with lowend and highoutput Comment from : @moistermusicrecords |
I've been using an older Yamaha THR10 for about 10 years now, it's the exact amp that I used to play on when I took guitar classes in the basement of my local music store And it's a great small amp It doesn't need to play loud to sound good and most of it's sounds are exactly what I need Lovely piece of gear Comment from : @Maciekovic |
nah your just squeamish LOUD! is important you play differently, if make something wrong the bucking amp punishes you for it errors hurt you become a better player Nothing against practice amps my favourite is an old 60s lorenz and schaub Schaub Lorenz Tube Kitchen radio, with one of those weird eliptical speakers It sounds glorious found it on the road some good soul had already installed a guitar jack takes pedals good too but every amp i played does my favourite pedalplattform is solidstate AER amp one Bass amplifier in combination with a cranked laney cub15 Stack owners turn pale Comment from : @dasczwo |
I had a similar mental progression I have a Katana and THR and the both rock! The THR speakers are a bit small but the thing still sounds amazing Comment from : @seanc5310 |
nice video Comment from : @sammydaboul6781 |
you said thr and i was like yoooo i have one of thosee Comment from : @WaterworksMC |
I have a THR 30 and I still have some tube amps, one is a five watt that can be also be set a 1 watt The only time I use anything other than the THR is at band practice It is practical and and convenient, and it sounds good at low volumes Because it's so easy it just makes you play more than you would if you had to use some complicated set up actually the Yamaha is not the only good practice I'm out there There is the katana air, which is also really good and the NuX which I haven't tried but is supposedly also very nice and has an inbuilt looper If the THR would be updated to include the looper I think I would go for it Comment from : @svarfinnbogason3645 |
What makes a practice amp not a "real" one? People get hung up on the wrong thing about what makes an amp - an amp Main thing amp does is takes a very quiet signal you get via induction from pickups and amplifies it to the level that it can move the speakers That's literally it It's an amplifier This has a solid state power amp in it to move the speakers The end Comment from : @Quicksilver_Cookie |
I got myself one a while back I've actually returned 4 of them for the same exact issue, settled on the 5th, the issue showed up a few weeks later At that point I was just too lazy to keep returning them, so I decided it's not such a big deal The issue is there's a crackling sound when moving the reverb dial between 80-100 (the upper ranged of the default "hall" preset) After a while I also noticed the amp (still default settings) would start to "crackle", "pop" and "hiss" when using the "4" or "5" presets or their equivalents on the dial (Hi Gain/Special) This can be fixed by doing a factory reset on the device, but it happens a little too often for comfort in my case I also cannot get a good clean tone out of it, no matter what I do and hearing your clean on the exact same model just made my jaw drop I use a '93 mexican fender strat, so I doubt it's the guitar, but my clean sound is pretty much always distorted anyway, except on very low volume and when reducing gain to compensate becomes flat like the girlfriend you guys wish you had I still use it, I still like it for some things, but I never had a chance to compare to a Katana, so do that before you decide to grab one of these Hopefully at least some of these things were fixed in recent years, if this even gets made anymore Comment from : @poio2162 |
literally listening to this video thru thr amp Comment from : @gromovmx355 |
THR owner here Love this little guy I moved onto it from my starter amp, which was a Line 6 Spyder What a world of change! Eventually I felt I needed more options and now I run my HX Stomp and other pedals into it while it is on the FLAT setting Zero desire to change anything! Comment from : @personalsinr |
HI Mike, I have the thrII 10 question is do you think that having a $550 practice amp really worth it? Comment from : @mortbot |
Ive owned solid state amps, tube amps, and have used amp sims on my Mac NOTHING comes close to my JCM 800 thru my Orange 2x12, it’s the one of the few “never sell” pieces that I own Comment from : @maxwellblakely7952 |
The classic lead tone is so buttery and versatile between high and low gain Comment from : @LABAMBA212 |
I've been a tube amp snob all my life BUT,,,, I use an old THR10 that I've had for years almost every day That speaks volumes considering I have more than 12 and less than 20 tube amps up in the garage My main amp is still an old rebuilt Princeton chassis installed in a floor standing Philco antique radio cabinet Comment from : @hotbread148 |
If Yamaha will have looper I definitely buy it but now, any desktop amp have own limitations But for me now, maybe Boss Katana Air EX, because is still quiet but speakers are 5 inch which gives a more bas sound Comment from : @jestemkwita |
My band's rhythm guitarist and I used a THR for recording some cover tracks via DI Clean, crunch, and lead tones(for a HS strat and HH Tele) were easy enough to dial to our liking Great tool for tracking demos, for sure, but also fun for riffing through its speakers Covers the basics very well Great commentary, Mike! Comment from : @roadrat33 |
Ever since getting the Yamaha THR30II, I've never played guitar more It makes being able to pick up the guitar, plug in, and play super easy Especially being able to just bring it upstairs to the bedroom or around the house Comment from : @btmunkey |
I have a dozen or so old vintage tube amps, don’t like digital anything Comment from : @paulsigmon7263 |
Would like to see how it takes to modelers like a hx stomp or valeton gp-200 Comment from : @youngsavage80 |
I have a THRii10 and I like it but I have to say, it does not take pedals well Once you have 4-5 running simultaneously you get a lot of clipping and fizz Maybe the THRii30 takes them better though Also mine does not have an effects loop and if I knew that I think I would have sprung for the THRii30 which I believe does Comment from : @justink8156 |
Had one, sold it I still prefer playing low on a small tube Amp Comment from : @Marsubleu |
Okay let's all admit is that the quality of this video is insanely good and artistic I mean composition and lighting and timing bro it is a movie 😎 Comment from : @ruslanlukovskii6743 |
I got a THR 30 about a year ago, and it’s incredible Comment from : @boonerichardson1639 |
I traded amps with a friend for about a month, my Vox Valvetronix vs his THR I didn’t like the sound It felt like a recording of a guitar, that’s the best way I can describe it Not bad, just not for me Comment from : @rabbithowls71 |
My first practice amp was a Fender Sidekick 25 Reverb It was pretty good for my ability in those days But a few years ago, the Spark came out and I had to have one I'd heard of the Boss Katana, but I wasn't impressed with Boss's effects in a BR 600 recorder I had The recorder worked great, and I still use it today But not the effects The Spark was really quite amazing! But, I never knew that Yamaha even made an amp I would have leaned toward that THR because of Yamaha's known quality Mike, you have a great channel I really enjoy your videos Keep it up!!! Comment from : @azcharlie2009 |
Look into a Spark 40 with my Spark "Friedman Roids XX" upload Patch Comment from : @Arcturian1111 |
I LOVE my THR30ii… best amp I ever owned… the Line6 wireless relay is a must, and you can dial in a ton of tones using the iOS app Truly a fantastic piece of gear Comment from : @ZL1LoVeR |
I own one For what it’s designed to do, it’s perfect Comment from : @santiagovanegas3812 |
that faaaaceee on the preview 😩😩😩😩 Comment from : @АртёмШтода-э9э |
it sounds great but you can get most of this in the boss katana mk2 for $250 less Comment from : @officialbuttmuncher |
Mike, that first clean progression was gorgeous! Comment from : @kyledrevlo1962 |
Who the hell are the x-men?? Comment from : @bucephulus4600 |
I have a really nice studio with all kinds of guitars amps and modeling equipment The amp I use the most - when I’m just practicing for fun - is my wireless thr No cables, pedals, wireless connection to my phone for a backing track to jam to Easy, fast, simple, and sounds great It allows more time playing and less time setting up gear to play Comment from : @greggesaman535 |
Since i bought the yamaha thr its my only amp I perform with it (thrue stereo out to pa) and it's great sounding Comment from : @Andrey1308K |
