question on this one, you don't need to remove the barrel nut? I have an AR556 with the 11 inch handguard (8529, i think) which i cut down to 142 p/w, but i was told i'm married now to the handguard Is it possible to change it without taking off the barrel nut?

The caliper measurements you made don't mean anything The barrel sits in the center of the handguard so its really height above center and height below center, not if the gas block would simply fit if not confined to the center by the barrel Ask me how I know
