If a calibration universal standard doesn't exist, it should And I would imagine that if the manufacturers wa Ted one, it would exist brbrI think that I would also have to call BS on a manufacturer that says that calibrating a TV to a standard would demand too much cost added to the product to be beneficial to the consumerbrbrHigh quality - high speed optical industrial instruments are ubiquitous Think of all the products that race down a line faster than TVs that are scanned not only scanned for specified dimensions, but also for the slightest cosmetic blemish These optical systems linked directly to the TV OS is easy and likely wouldn't add much to the costbrbrIMO, the resistance to a universal calibration standard and setting is due to an unwillingness by the manufacturers to implement one And when I ask "why", I can't come up with a reason that benefits the consumer Comment from : @busboy262 |

Boo on the longevity front! My 40" Sony KDL40EX400 1080p LCD TV is from 2010 and still going strong as my primary TV I too would be willing to get a smaller TV if it's solid and looks good for many years I think 48" would be kind of a sweet spot LG has put out some OLEDs in that size, and the prices aren't terrible, but I worry about burn-inbrbrEven when I finally get a new 4K TV with all the bells and whistles, that would just mean the Sony would get moved to secondary TV duty in another room, not tossed Comment from : @danieldougan269 |
I'm still using a 32" JVC CCFL backlit 720p LCD from 2007 for my game systems (PS4, PS3, PS2, Sega Saturn, Sega Genesis/32x/CD) That TV has two HDMI, two component, and a composite input I'd like something in 40-43" but I need to collect some good upscalers first, plus I really, really don't want a smart TV I should have upgraded a few years ago Comment from : @djsone3499 |

Great video but I feel like budget TV got lost in translation here I haven't seen anyone yet give this specific type of review These suggestions are expensivebrbrSo I'm looking for an actual budget review like best performing TV ( meaning color quality, frame rate, UI, sound) for like a max $600 before tax That's been a tough type of review to find brbrPersonally I don't trust Hisense because of the amount of defects they are prone to have Comment from : @any4003 |

At 43”, what is the best TV for just casual viewing and the occasional gaming? Comment from : @itsmini6175 |

I just had to replace ,my tv in the bedroom because it died , it was a 37 inch Vizio, it lasted 13 years! Since bedroom I thought 37 inches was the biggest I could get, but I remeasured and found out that a 43inch would be able to fit! I live in New York and went to PC Richards since they had a 32 inch 4k , but after checking the measurements, the sales representative found out that to 43 inch would be fit! Please don't laugh, I purchased the Samsung 43 Q60C, I've had it for about a week and I m highly impressed by it! As a new subscriber I'm not sure if you did a review on that model! Would be cool if you did one! Anyway thank you can't wait to watch More,! New subscriber from NYC! Btw I was able too pick it up for 447$ which I thought was a great deal! Is there any point in buying a flagship model TV with it being so expensive Because when these TVs win the best TV off the year and these get the five stars they've all been professionally calibrated So if you're not going to professionally calibrate these TVs is there any point in buying these❓ Comment from : @davidmckee2898 |

I’ve clickity clicked :) I don’t often comment on videos but I just wanted to say the quality of your videos and their content are great and noticeably improving over the years - I’m kind of shocked that viewership is down (I guess partially due to cost of living pressures and the pandemic?) - as an audience member I watch your content for value for money purchases that are only semi-impulse buys 😅brbrKeep up the great work :) I hope you start getting the sort of viewership numbers I saw 8 years ago! Comment from : @jamjenius8498 |

The best budget 4k 55 inch tv right now in my opinion are the Hisense u7k and the TCL Q7 Comment from : @petedetraglia4776 |
Go into the menu in your cable box and make sure it is outputting at 1080pIt way easier to uspscale 1080p than the stock setting of 720p Your tv picture should look WAY better just doing that alone Other than that try to dial in sports mode on your tv to get the best picture Comment from : @petedetraglia4776 |
The cheap Toshiba fire TV is the best for 55" and under Lasts forever and decent picture quality Comment from : @epencrep |
Is 4k on an OLED any different than 4k on a qled TV? Is 4k always 4k, no matter what you watch 4k content on? I have a 4year old TCL R617 and still love it Will an upgrade new TV improve my 4k experience? Thanks, love your content and watch every episode Comment from : @stevedowns1662 |

This is the problem , in this time , not everyone is looking for larger ty`s especially us on a budget Tv makers anymore just want to follow the money , and make larger tv`s for there benefits of making more money off them , They do not care for the less unforgent folks looking for a tv at a good price under 600 or 500 dollars anything under 43 inches Comment from : @rueagonvyceratops2879 |

Hi Caleb, brbrI have a question for you: the LG 55B3 and 55QNED85 are both 999 right now By comparison, the Sony X90L is 1099 Of those three what is your favorite set? I’m really leaning towards the B3 but a little scared to buy the “budget model” while these high end non-OLED model are on sale Comment from : @treyperry9722 |

Hi, I am from South Africa and wanted to buy the TCL QM8, however this particular model is not available here What we did receive here is the TCL C845 which is a close match but with less dimming zones Are you able to provide some insight on the C845 as this is my preferred choice bar the Hisense U8K which is also available here PS I am an avid follower of your channel and appreciate your attention to detail with all your reviews Hope to hear from you soon Comment from : @navesh82 |

Another problem with sports is that you need variable-rate compression I say this as a person who took out a US patent on the DASH streaming protocol for just improving sports playback bitrates I was watching cycling event in 2011, and it was switching between the in-studio commentator and the cyclists pedaling their bikes In-studio the announcer was crystal clear - too clear, actually On the bike, the spinning chainwheel was a blocky mess They actually needed to reduce the compression of in-studio video and save the extra bandwidth to do less compression on the bike shots Most TV systems today probably can't do this in real-time for a live broadcast, but for a pre-recorded event a good video mastering engineer can do it with a few hours of patience to perfect the compressed video Comment from : @dgillies5420 |
Looking forward to that Sony A😉 review! Comment from : @mattharbinger2448 |

Thank you for shedding light on the degraded signal received from traditional cable 2 days prior to this video I had a huge aha moment when I noticed the difference in picture quality from watching an episode of the Golden Bachelor (don't judge) recorded on my xfinity DVR and streaming it from Hulu It was a dramatic difference, far sharper streamed from Hulu It made so much sense Comment from : @TheSplurt |
Unpopular opinion: I would take a $10,000 car loan if I could just get a 65" tv with the exact same screen as my 14" Macbook Pro LOL No settings, no calibration, just brightness adjustment Comment from : @Jev55 |

7:53 - recently watched the USA vs Germany match on TV, which was held in the US, and DAMN that signal was dog water, compared to our channels over here Comment from : @Rainquack |

Too many years ago to mention now at school I asked my science teacher how do we know for sure we're the ones seeing colours for what they actually are? Maybe those who are are classed as colourblind are actually right? Hated school anything for an argument 😂 Comment from : @stepheng8779 |

How about a TCL 43 inch tv? Even a 50 inch TCL might be good enough for this consumer 😊 Comment from : @michaelwyckoff7593 |

Actually for Ben a QN90C in 43'' should fit his needs as it has 120 hz QLED mini LED tv with all the belts and whistles and should last 15 years compared to oled Comment from : @turbojobo |

Sony is TERRIBLE for "Build Quality" I had multiple Sony products - including TV sets and an ES A/V Receiver that did NOT lost a long time The one 70" TV set only lasted less than four years That was a shame, because that was a 3D TV set I bought all those 3D movies and can no longer watch them, because 3D TV sets aren't made anymore The A/V Receiver was an expensive Sony ES A/V Receiver It had a 5-Year Warranty Shortly after five years, the A/V Receiver stopped working I took it to a Licensed Repair place and was told the motherboard had overheated and there was nothing that could be done for a repair Even thought it was literally a matter of days past the "Five-Year" time period, Sony continued to tell me, "Sorry, it is passed the five-year warranty time period" All that money out the window I will never buy another Sony product again And I actually encourage people NOT to spend a lot of money on electronics, because as Caleb said, "These products are NOT built the way they were in the past" In the past I still have a VCR from 1992 and a DVD player from 2000 that I purchased that still work Electronics today are pathetic and don't last that long, so I don't mind buying the cheaper stuff now Comment from : @michaelzoran |
Caleb, SUCH an excellent explanation of presets and calibration and the reasons one might want to calibrate their TV! Comment from : @paulbrown2422 |
Hi caleb, 2 questions:br1 Why did you put an emoji over one of the sony TV's referenced during the discussion on calibration? Was it an older model?brbr2 Is there a timefraime that calibration is mist impactful? Ie should you calibrate a TV straight away or can you still calibrate after a year or two of general use?brbrThanks for your feedback Loving your content here in Australia Comment from : @grantwhittington6522 |

There is another 43" Premium tier TV available The Samsung QN90C is available in 43" and 50" sizes The Q80C is also available in 50", but its refresh rate drops to 60Hz at that sizebrbrWith regards to OLEDs, as mentioned already both Sony and LG offer OLEDs in 42" sizes They also offer them in 48" sizes IMHO the Sony is a better TV, but the LG is a better Gaming TV Comment from : @randallsmith2521 |

My Friend Jimmy: Memoirs of Alien Abductions Comment from : @onlyseriouscontent7927 |

One other thought for Ben By the time you account for the huge bezels on his 15 year old 40”Toshiba, the size difference isn’t that dramatic I looked up an older 40” Toshiba’s dimensions and compared them to a 55” Sony X90L and the height difference is only about 3” and the width is about an 8” difference Comment from : @wynkoop2000 |
In regards to the poor picture quality/compressed data part of the video I don't know if it's still this way or not, but OTA HD programming is/was damn near bluray quality because they don't limit the bandwith with OTA like they do in other formats Comment from : @LilJayV10 |
The best signal for sports is over the air Almost all digital antenna TV is uncompressed And wow, can you notice the difference Comment from : @kewitt1 |
We ask this question every year!!!! LOL Comment from : @lamarwilliams185 |
I would’ve recommended a great sound bar to go with that Sony He has it in his budget and would make a great upgrade Love your content Comment from : @1381russell |
The next generation of TV will use AI to take over almost everything in settings, modes, and memories It will sort your profiles based on your daily use or find the best settings for each content that it shows on your TV in a matter of milliseconds IMO, this kind of TV will last for a long time because the AI will keep learning and improving every day
br
brThe AI will be a key factor in the longevity of these TVs As the AI learns more about your preferences and the content that you watch, it will be able to provide you with an even better viewing experience This will make you less likely to want to upgrade to a new TV in the future brbrBtw, great Ep as usual 👍 Comment from : @Matr0X |
What do you think about the tcl q6 Google tv 75" brI am thinking about getting it I have an old sharp 75" 1080p what do you recommend 🤔 Comment from : @luismorales6559 |
I'm a clinger too I hope to keep my year 2000 Sony A8H OLED for a decade Fortunately, my living room is low light, so the tv brightness is turned down Comment from : @ivenhoho |
The guy looking for an under 55" TV should just go for a 55" model since they are in reality a little smaller than 55" diagonal screen anyway! I got the last high end Sony TV that was available <55" (a 49" Sony X950H) a couple years ago for my family room Another reason the older 1080p TVs looked better for sports programs years ago was they were smaller screens than the bigger screens most folks are upgrading to The compression artifacts are more visible on bigger screens Indeed channels are more compressed now, its a tradeoff between quantity vs quality, and the broadcasters have chosen quantity (more channels) reducing quality to fit them in the limited bandwidth Comment from : @donb7574 |
Hey Caleb any chance you’d be willing to review the Samsung S90C I’d love to hear your thoughts on it Comment from : @benshaw2312 |
I don't think the Samsung QN90C should be 3rd choice myself, it's a damn fine TV and rated a good bit higher than the Sony X85K on RTINGS Comment from : @CasepbX |
I want to believe the calibration part, but computer monitors can almost be calibrated automated with a $100 colorimeter that sets up a profile for the operating system to use You just dangle the device in the middle of the screen and press "Start" Sometimes it can be improved slightly by adjusting RGB sliders by hand as you go, but it gets the color errors and gamma curve correction better than most TVs come out of the factory, so they could have custom color profiles added too ASUS's art monitors get custom calibration at the factory brbrAt the very least, the option to use a SpyderExpress or similar device with a TV like you can with a computer monitor seems easy to implement in a "smart" TV that has a computer inside with 4 GB of RAM and some storage spacebrbrI wondered if there is disagreement about what correct color is among different companies For instance, in the Rtings review of the Sony A95K they mention that Sony targets a cooler whitepoint than D65 standard (which is based on midday light in London under overcast skies? is perception of light regional?) Comment from : @msd5808 |
@caleb denison i live in a small island called trinidad and tobago so we dont have much options when it comes to tvs i would just like your opinion when it come to the tcl 65c845 thanks love your vids Comment from : @starkidrhonda3479 |
Sony a95l review ? Comment from : @johanmelis12 |
I agree with the earlier answers but the last two were egregiousbrbr1) Streaming can be excellent even beating OTA broadcasts Examples would be TNF on Amazon Prime and MLB on Apple TV plus I haven't had cable and satellite for years so I can't comment if they gotten worse And just avoid YouTube TV if you care about compressionbrbr2) You know what they'll be saying 15 years from now? They don't make them like they used to What a BS fallacybrbrUnless you want to avoid OLED the LG 48C3 OLED is the no brainer answerbrbrAs for panel longevity the latest results from rtings show that LCD panels are having their own issues And Sony sure in the heck isn't acquitting itself well in these tests And anecdotally Sony is having quality issues based upon Amazon reviews and feed back from users on AVS It's just bush league for Caleb to infer LG has more quality issues than Sony Comment from : @johnb4905 |
