I saw a therapist who had really no structure at all After 4 months, she said that we were going over in time every session, and she had other patients to see I was shocked I had thought the sessions were 55 min when in reality they were 45 mins with her My therapy sessions 1 year before with a different therapist were a full hour I was blown away in a bad way that this therapist did not let me know sooner the length of the sessions I was embarrassed and immediately was trying to figure out how I was going to make up (give back the time) I went to look at my initial paperwork that I had signed and realized one of the information sheets did explain it sessions were 45 mins so it was my mistake The paperwork included stuff like HIPPA so I just signed and didn't read However, I still can't understand that she never clarified things She did eventually apologize genuinely when she found out how upset I was However, I realized that I always had this feeling she wasn't going to be honest and upfront with issues since she took 4 months to bring things up My feedback to therapists is to take the first couple minutes of a session if you need to clarify anything Before my therapist finally brought things up, I had a feeling things were off, but I pushed those feelings down Looking back, I am pretty sure this therapist may have been feeling some resentment towards me The comment that she had other patients to get to, and that were always going over in time, made me feel that she was upset I tried to stick it out with more therapy with her, hoping things would get on track, but soon after I ended therapy The therapeutic relationship felt damaged to me, and it sad and upsets me that it was over such a small thing that I feel could have been easily clarified Those first few mins of sessions would have been an easy time to set things on track early on I try to look at the few good things I got out of the therapy, but I do have a feeling much of the therapy was a waste I wish in a way I had not shared some of the deep things with her that I did Comment from : @ww9192 |
I love taking one to two mins to review the treatment goal or what was done in last session Comment from : @apple1hun |

If you follow this advice you'll be in therapy for decades! The therapist is not your friend client wants to deviate the therapist iisok with that ( what it actually means is you will never solve your original issue but you'll find many more issues once she let's you go there Comment from : @loutirador2421 |

Could you please let go of this artificial funny stile and speak slowly? Comment from : @ffytgm |
For consistent structure, I always open visits with “so I want to follow up on our conversation last time and the ideas we discussed trying between visits, but what do you want to make sure we address?”brbrAnd for the polite remarks walking back, I typically ask “what have you been up to today” which usually occupies the time well enough, can be interesting/relevant and is different than the bland “how are you” Comment from : @Rorshacked |
I have an idea, why don't we create a WhatsApp group so that we can get educated on what do, for beginners Comment from : @queenwilmah5299 |

The all-important "and this is now the session" line My therapist always says "So, what's new? What's different?" I didn't even notice this right awayit's a stealth transition and it works perfectly :) Comment from : @SABRMatt2010 |
Lol my therapist is always late and once I even had to wait 40 minutes but it's ok 😂👍 Comment from : @catherinerichter8317 |

I'm watching this as I'm waiting for my online therapy session! I'm in more of "maintenance" mode, but this stuff rings true It's all about client- centered respect Comment from : @daveowens271 |
My advice "Don't Be So Horny To Begin Asking About Goals For The Future" Depending on your client he/she may have gone through with goals before To just put together goals for only the sake of having something to look forward to isn't healthy either Patient may have tried making goals before but wasn't able to make them happen Only for therapist to point out "You're Trying Too Hard You Have To Let It Happen Naturally" Sometimes you may need to rehash old attempts to figure out a new strategy Perhaps a bit more Comment from : @danielhayes7967 |
Great information - as always! Thank you Any tips for an initial consultation? Comment from : @pamelatopjian |
This was a great video! So helpful! Comment from : @neya292 |
Great content and detail And your info applies to consultation work in general, not just therapy! Comment from : @LisaT1 |
Good topic I, too, review my notes before the client comes in Doing that is like gathering and integrating the client's, therapist-client, movement over time With that info and conceptualisation in my mind, I go the waiting room, invite the client into my office, sit down, and say, "sowhat have you been noticing"? Sometimes I say, "what's it been like to be you this past week?" brbrAfter they answer these open questions and I find out their orientation to self and world, and me, their affect, thinking, appearance, voice, I skillfully lead into the ongoing work, the goals let's say Exception: urgent, emergent issues, including safety or med management, substances, legal actions Comment from : @homefryniles3983 |
This is great! brHave you done/could you do a video about ending session?? Comment from : @DeLight333 |
Great video with practical information I can make so adjustments to my style Thanks for what you do! Comment from : @try-uneservices7832 |
