If you weren't living at home on mommy and daddy's dime at the time, this would be impressive, but you had your parents providing privilege and the safety net of your parents having to take care of all the adult responsibilities/bills, which is what allowed you to save any money Comment from : @Old_World_Nobility |
|
It took you 3-4 years for 10k You were not saving $100 a week You were saving $50 a week brbrWhich is still very good I am guessing I don't think a lot of people are saving $200 a month Comment from : @tonyp9313 |

I don't know when you were 21 years old and working at Panera Bread, but my guess is that the cost of living has gone up since that time My personal challenge to saving money is that i have monthly bills that are always increasing while my modest income is fixed However, i can see the practicality of what you advise for those who are 21 yo and living at home with no responsibilities Comment from : @MPam1619 |

Living at your parents place while working for a year or two is such a privilege I took advantage of it, and it set me up for financial success brbrNow, I'm a student living with two roommates at subsidized housing, and I won't have this low housing expenses ever again I work part time, and the situation is not that different from before income-wise, given that the government (of my country) pays half of my rent, there's no tuition and I get a student allowance from the government If I didn't work part time, my situation would be very different, but if you're willing to work part time and live with roommates, you can do very well financially as a student in my country Comment from : @excitedaboutlearning1639 |

So true ❤ Comment from : @kimpatterson8741 |

An $8/hr job when you have no bills is like having a much higher paying job, because you got to keep all of it because you have no rent, bills, etc So if you were making, $20/hr, and had to pay for everything, like rent, utilities, etc… , you probably wouldn’t have had any leftover So really, that was good money for you $8/hr jobs were a problem for those who had to try to actually live off of $8/hr I don’t think $8/hr jobs exist anymore, but now, $13/hr is the new $9/hr It’s basically minimum wage I am an HR person and I onboard and enter new hires at a full-service, upscale, name brand hotel Before the pandemic people would work for $9/hr, but nowadays people won’t work for less than $13/hr, which is the rate of pay for the dishwashers Housekeepers start at $15/hr, when they used to start at $9/hr Too bad the cost of literally EVERYTHING is also so much more, so that dramatically reduces the value of these pay increases Comment from : @maryshellsmith6627 |

Anyone can save It's all about keeping your 'wants' in check, knowing what you bring in, and what gets taken out each month for bills I have a friend who is in his mid 40s now, has no savings, and is constantly depressed due to not having that financial independence you can save money at any wage (just about) if you know how to cut corner and save, while still maintaining the bills that are most important Comment from : @PJ-sv4iw |

My husband had a “decent” job, and was able to pay all but the last semester of college for our oldest daughter She was a full-time student and worked part-time at a daycare She still lived at our house She drove 22 miles (one way) to the university every day, and the daycare was 3 miles further, which was a 25 mile drive back home in the evenings She made $900/hour at the daycare The last semester loan was $7,000 she had to pay She paid it off in 2 1/2 years, and she was still working at the daycare full time during those two-and-a-half years!! She’s always been our most frugal daughter I taught our daughters how to “properly” shop for their clothes: at Goodwill!! They were in elementary school at the time!! (They didn’t like the clothes I was buying them at Walmart, and asked me to teach them how to shop for their own clothes!!) 😅 Comment from : @tinaanderson9186 |

Good tips but really living at home and saving money that way is basically the main way you saved People's living (and accompanying expenses) is generally their largest expense so yea, cut that out and you get to save all that money that would've otherwise gone towards rent/living expenses Comment from : @frankie9953 |

Good advice, when currency is relativelynstable I grew up in Poland, started earning part time after school in the 80-ties, inflation was significant,, and savings were consumed, everyone could see it After exiting the army, 90-ties, unemployment was horrible and inflation reached 60 Average wage in Poland was about 20 dollars Savinggs in dollars had some sense, in Polish zloties - not really But before 1989 trading foreign currency was illegal, aftter 1990, you could buy at least 5 USD, if you were lucky, exchange placece preferred to trade larger notes Keep in mind, I earned an equivalent of at most 20 USD, prices of everything increasing every day (60 yearly) and most of my earnings had been spent Things Changed, when I started work in the casino, but for an average Pole saving were almost impossible Back to now, it seems that every country prints money, inflation speeds up Comment from : @jacekberkowski5542 |
