Part of the family evaluation needs to include considering mom and dad working into their 70's to make the math work Most of us boomers will be doing that They're no different Unless you are disabled or ill, no reason to retire in your 60's if you need a larger nest egg and/or are not willing to downsize your standard of living Shame on the parents for asking their kids for support

The mom income is $2000 and let's assume the dad income is $1000 with social security Unless I'm missing something That should be enough for a older couple to live on if they are living within their means

And something is missing, she said her mother is being cut back to 2000 a month, what about pops? Even if that is combined, I know people who live on that here in New York You should be able to live VERY well on 2000 in other states

I have 3 kids that all make a lot more than me I am embarassed and humiliated if they buy me a burger!! I can't imagine asking them for money As a family, if there is a true need, we work together to take care of it, but we never borrow money from one another

Instead of writing a blank check, the better idea is to pay for specific expenses to take the load off I'd start with something like utilities which are defined and easy to determine if being abused

I agree giving money never “actually” helps the person in need !! If they really need money help but make sure to ask them to return it to you I have seen this personally in my family!! My husband would have helped his sister with at least 20k till now and yet she doesn’t have enough!! Reason why she needs money is because she is bad at managing money and expectations don’t buy expensive cars, do not send your kids to private school, don’t eat out too much, don’t buy pricey Indian clothes in Australia!! Ironically we don’t do any of these ourselves but have to finance her frivolous expenses!! I try to explain this to him and I become bad person 🤦🏽‍♀️ she will never learn!!

Yeah, my narcissistic mother is going to have to sell the home she lives in, in order to feed herself, should it come to that She can always move in with my sister, in the home she is to suddenly inherit now, after barely being present for all these decades My mother is banking on me not letting her lose her home as, I might inherit it before I’m dead That there is an epic failure of a plan as, she has done all she can to destroy the property anyway so, since the plumbing might be toast and the house determined as worth nothing, she can eat the wood planks for sustenance, for all I care

In the Philippines it's customary here to give our parents a part of your salary when you started working And, when they get old we house them to our own home and take care of thembrbrIt's like the retirement plan here in my country is investing on your children's education and once they started earning, parents will also get part of it 😂 idk, it's not really a spoken rule it just Filipino culture I guess

Like many people, I help my parents You have to remember, if you're handing over money consistently, there is an issue there The more you do for them, the less you are able to do for your self, and ONE DAY, you will have to retire as well
