You guys mention that to transport the car from out of state you may need to get temporary tags in the state of purchase OR your home state? My home state is Connecticut Do you know if I can get temporary plates for the car without a Bill of sale and title as I won't have those items prior to going out of the state to buy the car Maybe just the VIN and make and model? I titled, registered and plated my out of state car and was given a sales tax "credit" by the BMV because at the time of purchase I told the dealer to mail the sales tax check to the BMV 2 months later I got a check in the mail for the sales tax and found out the BMV never collected it Now the BMV says they cant accept the check because it "must" be done at the time of registration Now my department of revenue says the dealer should pay their states portion to their state that I already paid at the time of purchase and mail me a check for the difference made out to the DOR of my state This Is Fun Comment from : @PremiumChad |

I'm on the fence for purchasing a car out of state There is one in Chicago area that meets almost my criteria, for the age of the car and what they are asking for it makes me cringe a bit I appreciate that there is 22,000 miles on the car, paint looks like brand new on showroom floor, and they even say it drives like new, it is a 1994 Pontiac Bonneville In my state it does not need an inspection 1995 and older because they do not do a smog test, they hook car up to the obe II and read the computer if there are anything in history or current for issues, they don't even do a shock or strut test anymore So technically the car would be exempt from inspection Another thing that makes me hesitant to purchase is the proposal of gas heading in the neighborhood price of between 7 to 8 dollars per gallon for the possible loss of the crude oil supply we don't even purchase from as a nation Comment from : @timothyweers8054 |

About 14 months ago before things got super crazy, I spotted a 3 year old car I wanted 60 miles away over the Indiana border It had many fewer miles than others I had seen and the engine and trim level I was having difficulty finding in the Chicago area The hardest part was picking out a local mechanic to check it out based on google reviews and a phone interview, but I got it done On the initial closing estimate, they used Illinois state tax, which is slightly higher than Indiana's When I picked the car up, they changed the Invoice to Indiana sales tax rate When I plated the car, I had to cut a check for the difference (small glitch, but no big deal) I would suggest only doing this with a very reputable dealer who clearly knows what they are doing and not a small or sleazy independent, "buy here/pay here type place" Comment from : @treesnmoguls |

I bought an out of state car because I was looking for a very specific model, and a dealer in Connecticut had exactly what I was looking for Because I was looking for a specific make, model, engine and transmission combination, the dealer knew they had me over the barrel so they screwed me royally on my trade in brbrThey also tried to screw me in the Finance office The finance guy told me "Window VIN etching is required by law in the State of Connecticut" Since I'm not from Connecticut, I didn't know that wasn't true When I got home, I Googled it and the first link on the Connecticut Secretary of State's office stated specifically that it was NOT required I called the dealer and threatened a claim with the Secretary of State's office and they refunded that chargebrbrMy warning to those of you doing an out of state purchase, on top of everything Kevin and Elizabeth said, is to familiarize yourself with the laws when purchasing a car in another state Comment from : @marathoner43 |
