I have watched this movie more than a dozen times and I've been thinking about some context for these scout's rationale As outrageous and goofy as they portray it, I get the idea of why they think that Part of the game of sports is mental and having a stable background I feel can attribute to better performance Now this isn't always the case when the athlete just has overwhelming talent but when I look at athletes with similar past performances, you notice that off-field distractions do play a major part in how they perform in the upcoming seasons It's no coincidence that these scouts are trying to find the diamond in the rough by going through these crazy ideas that may quantify confidence in an athlete I feel a portion of both Billy's analytical approach and the scout's character approach is the way to go

I love this scene; it clearly states the problem Beane is trying to solve, and it's not a problem anyone in that room is equipped to address When we meet Peter Brand a couple scenes later, and Brand immediately speaks directly to Billy's problem as a fan of baseball and an economics expert, it kicks off the movie in earnest and feels like a breath of fresh air, but only because this scene works so well at describing "the crystal ball" or "magic tea leaves" these recruiters are trying to interpret with each player I don't know much about baseball, but I liked this movie a lot for presenting a case of how to think differently about a problem

What's great about this movie is the realistic reactions of the other scouts Billy was trying to introduce a completely new strategy to people who have used the same methodologies for years, if not decades Of course they're gonna push back, not see his perspective and argue with each other It makes it all the more satisfying to watch Billy succeed later

The kind of talk you're hearing from the scouts in this scene is so reminiscent of the Harvard Business School nonsense you hear go on in meetings at large corporationsbrEmpty slogans from the mouths of "motivational speakers", theoretical gobbledygook learned from tenured business professors who've never had a real job in their lives, and just plain lying crap meant to deceive the listener into believing that the speaker knows what he's talking about In thirty years at a Fortune 500 company, I heard all manner of corporate BS, and the scary thing is how much of upper management believes itbrI know exactly how Billy feels in this scene I once had to be dragged away from dressing down a Divisional Manager about the obscenely nonsensical BS he'd just gotten done spending half an hour shoveling at us in a meetingbrThe difference here is that this kind of "classic swing", "the ball pops off his bat", "the guy's an athlete", nonsense isn't new, but 100 years old Billy has finally learned to see these slogans for the chicken entrails guesswork that they are When he asks, "If he's a good hitter, why doesn't he hit good?" The scouts don't have a real answer They just mouth more slogans
