I sing quite high while playing guitar, which I don't like (but I think it sounds alright tune wise) so I try sing with a slightly deeper voice while playing guitar and it just sounds bad, like my singing and or guitar playing suddenly goes s*** I assume its my deeper voice thats out of tune and will come right with practice? If that makes sense Comment from : @ThatGreenDayFanPiat |

This is very good advice Also, as silly as this might sound singers need to listen to themselves as they sing So often I hear people singing and they get so carried away in the moment, that they don't listen to their own voice I'm really conscious of listening to how my voice is sounding, remembering that what I am doing is a performance, it's a different kind of satisfaction/atmosphere for me, than singing along with friends at a party after a few drinks Also, when I was learning to play, I always talk-sang It helped putting the chord changes in the correct place and when I became good enough to play the song, singing was very natural I have know many people that learned to sing and play separately who later struggled to do them at the same time I was warned of this when I first started to play guitar and so always did them together I'm not an expert, but this really worked for me Comment from : @CliveWebbAustralia |

Hey Justin! Thank you lots!!! In grade 2, you teach the C scale using only 3 fingers (3 frets with open positions) In this video you are using 4 fingers and frets Does it matter if I play the corresponding note with a fret? (Not using the open position) Comment from : @richardkroyer5231 |

Thanks again for another great video! I usually watch your vids to pickup the hammer-ons and pull-offs you use to embelish songs but of course I always learn more BTW, I HAVE noticed your massive improvement in singing in your later vids Not for nothing but Tom Waits used to scream into his pillow to make his voice more gritty All the best to you Comment from : @tomhepner5118 |

Great video! It's nice to learn from someone that can relate, someone that's in our shoes brI think it's much easier to learn this way rather from a super vocal coach that never addresses the beginner issues that you cover Major props!! Comment from : @ravenartsandgraphics4456 |

I don’t care how late I am to this party, I just wanted to say, your “Hallelujah” a-la Tom Waits was amazing 😅 Made me look up if Tom Waits has ever done that song, and he hasn’t! But my memory tells me he has! Comment from : @ThomasWJames |

Lots of good ideas here I was a horrible singer a few years ago and still working on it to get better An idea I came up with to help is to find a few songs you love to sing and challenge yourself with doing Karoke in a bar or something like that Doing that in public alone helps you develop into a better singer and helps with eventually performing Comment from : @keithpowell5336 |

When I first watched your videos, I remember thinking " Just get on with it" and watched hundreds of other YouTube tutorials Being a three-chord wonder for like 55 years(seriously) I wanted to "get it" I had pretty much excepted guitar playing and singing was for my ears only Now I can hear you saying "Just get on with it" OK, You have an honest real, down-to-earth approach to teaching and broke it down enough to see the basic stuff I was not doing You Teach not only how to play but also listen, and I am so glad I finally did I am proud to have moved up to a multiple-chord wonder who on a good day can sing a few tunesbrI have you to thank for that Still watching, Listening and learning Comment from : @markjenningssteers1968 |

This is all well and good but my problem is singing and playing at the same time while staying in time How do you do that? Comment from : @nintendianajones64 |

This is an outstandingly good and useful lesson Justin, you are incredible Now at last I can stop straining to sing in a way that doesn’t feel natural Now I just need to go off and experiment with what DOES feel natural And I think that ‘talk singing, tip will be a game changer Comment from : @nicholasoulton8489 |

Thanks Justin, some good insights here brbrConfidence and relaxation seems to be the key for me, for both guitar and vocalsbrbrI also find my delivery goes up a level if i’m storytelling and emotionally attached to the actual lyrics and not just singing random words from a page brbrGood for you for continuing, I feel we are on a similar path vocally Some days I feel I am a great singer and others I feel I should just not even try But how can people like us not sing! Impossible Keep at it!brbrAnother useful thing I did was work out my vocal range, which for me is from the lowest open E on the guitar to the C (8th fret) on the high E string I try to stay within a few notes of that range Now I am more comfortable, know my limits and can adjust cover songs accordingly brbrUsing a capo to adjust your voice to certain songs can really help too brbrSorry for essay I hope I can help 1 person Thanks again Justin! You’re an invaluable pro Comment from : @112productions |

It takes time to learn how to breathe and control your vocal cords I learned by singing the same 20 songs with a tape in my car, for 2 hrs, 20 min/day, five days a week, for five years Now I can cover anybody in my range If you drive to a job every day, what better way to spend those boring hours Comment from : @parkeschaffer5808 |
|
|
Exactly, I watched several singing lessons and found I wasn't interested in what they were teaching I just wanted to sing with my guitar and enjoy it I am looking forward to working on the ideas you talk about, thank you! Comment from : @deangarrison6474 |

Thanks so much for this video Justin! I have also found that getting a little amp and singing live into an amp helps me hear my own voice a lot better Along with recording and listening to myself I find that when I listen to my own voice through an amp while singing I do a much better job of staying on key and keeping from pushing and singing too loud I got a cheap 15 watt amp and microphone and it has made a big difference in my singing Thank you Justin This was a perfect video for me! This is a fantastic video So much good advice Well done Comment from : @goodknight37 |
|
|
Some good points here bud I'm the same as you as in not a great singer but I do get by, I play solo in bars and I've got some positive feedback The biggest thing for me is knowing my the limits of what voice can do, there are certain songs that I love to sing at home but would never perform in front of people I swear some people at open mics have never heard themselves sing but that's okay because it's just fun, no ones getting paid :-) Comment from : @marksmith7789 |
