I also think you have a high brain processing power, or more like you have really great pattern recognition It is true that boring ways of studying something will take us not much farther like alphabets and stuff We need to face discomfort and active learning instead of passively trying to consume and make sense of informationbrbrAnother reason why I say this is because think about it, a language is such a huge domain of information You can't realistically put even a fraction of it in just 50 flash cards The reason why you can is because the flashcards you create probably have a lot of high weight in terms of usability of the language, or these are particularly words that you find the hardest to make sense or recognize as patternsbrbrHow long does it usually take for you to learn the vocabularies? Like nouns and verbs? And can you simply just speak structures of sentences like How was _? fluently and do you aggressively look for sentence templates like these?

Hi, Xiaoma! I teach Mandarin Chinese in the Chicago area, and a lot of what you said resonates with me! I try to give students immediately useful words first; we don't learn colors until the end of Chinese 2, for example, and I have virtually eliminated directions words from my curriculum since we just use Google Maps or Baidu or something instead of asking for directions Thanks for the insight, 我的学生都很喜欢你！

I don’t agree with what he’s saying here because most people don’t want to learn a language just to be conversational verbally Not learning how to read and write in the language leaves you completely unable to learn the language without a teacher In contrast if you learn to read the language you can teach yourself vocabulary as much as you want That being said I do agree with what he said about the problems of frontloading a language with information Conjugation shouldn’t be the first thing you learn but the alphabet definitely should be because that’s how you pronounce and read the words If you can’t read or pronounce words you’ll never be able to study independently

Being able to say a few phrases in a language is a world away from truly speaking it I can express roughly 2,000 different words in Welsh and string together a fair number of basic sentences Yet, I still find it difficult to have even a simple conversation with a native speaker I wouldn't remotely consider myself "able to speak Welsh" - not even close! And honestly, I feel like your YouTube videos are becoming increasingly misleading

A textbook can't teach you how a native speaker talks since you can't hear it What I did to help learn German was I watched their kids' programs and I bought a bunch of Blu-Rays from Germany Movies that I liked, but dubbed with native Germans So watching Lord of the Rings, Gandalf says, YOOOOOUUUU SHALL NOTTTTTT PASSSSSSSS But in German DUUUUUU KANNST NICHT VORBEEIIIIIIIIIIII brbrI've had to teach myself a couple of different languages since most teachers that I've had couldn't explain things properly I like literal translations I want to know EXACTLY what each word means I asked my German prof, what does "Gleich und Gleich gesellt sich gern" He says, 'bird of a feather, flock together' I said But there are no birds That's because what is actually being said in German is (roughly) Same and Same enjoy joining themselves brbrI don't care what we would say, if I'm learning their language "Well this is what we would say in English" Cool I'm learning German what do THEY say?
