My thoughts are that if you factor in cost and materials of a possible new battery, thermal paste and maybe an SSD its a bad deal The replacement of the thermal paste is a must and if you want to be on the safe side the SSD also, since a 2012 machine is pushing upwards of 13 years (as in 2024) of use Also and athough it was mentioned briefly using an operating system with no support is a bad idea in terms of security For instance doing online banking is a liability waiting to happen Also, if you are a student forget about using Microsoft 365 since its not supported anymore And thats half the story since most probably the latest versions of Chrome are also not supported having said that you would have to basically need to find "old" software in order to use it IMHO computers should be seen as tools that when they depreciate technologically they need to be replaced There's no need to have the latest and greatest but yes they have to keep up with the times Cheers! The batteries on MacBook Air models up to the 2017 models can all be replaced for about 30-50, not glued in In 2024, you can also get 2015 models with the 5th Gen Core i5 or i7 CPUs The 2015 Core i7 22 GHz model with 8GB RAM is basically the same as the 2017 models with the same CPU Plus the 2015 - 2017 MBA have Thunderbolt 2 what allows you to stream externally to a 4 K UHD 3840x2160 pixel display, SSD replacement is a bit tricky because of not so many are approved to work with these NGFF adapters, but you can also get SSDs that have the Apple SSD interface If 8GB RAM is installed, using Open Core Legacy Patcher you can even run the latest MacOS Sequoia, with 4 GB RAM I would stick with MacOS Ventura I tested even a MBA 2013 with 4 GB RAM and Ventura, it is absolutely fine for web browsing , word processing and internet banking, Ventura is getting also Security Updates until late 2025

I have the same year but 4gb of ram 900 cycles I also have the newer silicon but I used the 2012 to get some files off drive and I’m just amazed it still looks new and runs perfect just needs battery Screen resolution is horrid though 😂

For a little bit more, around $200, I was able to get a 2015 15" MacBook Pro with dedicated graphics, 16 GB of ram, and 512 GB of SSD storage Compared to that cheap Chromebook, the used MacBook that I got was a steal

I just got a 2011 Air for $50 cause of OS issues The previous owner didn't do the reset properly I reset it the right way and it works like a charm I also installed Catalina with a patcher

Anyway, MBP 13-inch Mid 2012 (Unibody) is more better! :) Cuz you can upgrade it to 16 Gb RAM (DDR3L 1600 MHz), install inside TWO (!!!) SSD (SATA 3) and you'll have display with better colors

I did the same 2 weeks ago on Ebay: 103 euros for a 2012 Macbook Air 13 with 256gb SSD, "only" 4gb ram, Core I5 3427U and battery in good conditions (about 291 cycles) For web browsing, office use, streaming (maybe not in 4K) and same it worth too

I bought a macbook air 11 inch 2015 Very good - hated apple operating system - changed it to Linux So much better with Linux I alsdo changed the hard drive to a standard to nvme ssd 512gb drive The adaptor cost me $4 in Thailand and easy to change the hgard drive Being used to Windows PC I am amazed that you can't upgrade the RAM - that is clearly designed by Apple to rip off customers

This is a cool solution to upgrade from the thick bezel Apple LCD especially inaccurate color for Creative worksbrCurrently I am using Asus Portable monitor 156" put it right in front of Apple 11" MBA monitor panel It is powered with USB 30 brI can have a lightweight MBA mid 2012 with a gorgeous portable huge screen setup i ever thought its possible brMajor drawback is the internal battery juice is very low brbrIdeally can go for portable monitor with builtin battery pack inverse charging the Macbook Air too brBut i not sure its a healthy setup to the MBA internal battery or not

Apple just dropped the MBA 2017 from OS Ventura and future OS updates, certainly not a good investment for anything other than cheap second hand prices now By the way, the trackpad is awesome: you can just set it to tap rather than press and you will not have an issue with the diving board design
