Just 30 mins before I watched your talk I felt it So i speak hindi and my man speaks spanish and we clearly talk in english So there was this scenario and I sent him a screenshot of a chat between me and my best friend brI asked my boyfriend 'do you understand what this conversation is about?' and he said 'honestly, no'brSo I translated for him and our conversation (not more than two sentences) was very hilarious and funny in hindi Reading my best friend's reply made me laugh and smile a lot but my boyfriend just replied 'okay' and I felt bad and sad brIn our relationship I have experienced a lot of communication gap and day to day both of us are trying to overcome I'm trying to learn spanish while he's trying to learn Hindi with our busy schedules brBut at the end of the day, it's all worth a life with him Comment from : @VinitaVinita-gz2vb |

Even though your English is SOOO perfect to me, you feel som level of detachment between your first language and English However, that's inevitable as you mentioned All of us might need to embrace it We need to embrace it since our brains are designed in that way This is my big concern but a profound subject I've been delving into for so long Comment from : @dannyhyun6832 |

If all couples waited 3-4 days to respond to the anger of their partner I think that the world would have a lot more happy couples Comment from : @Joseph2day |

Oh, how many times we don’t understand each other in our own language😅and sometimes too much speak brings us down 😊 I think men and women speak differently anyway 😉❤ Comment from : @ladybird3447 |

As a British man with a Persian wife living in an English speaking country, I found this very interesting and relevant brI recognize all the challenges within our relationship Having the superior English language skills makes it tempting to use it to have power over my wife As the speaker says, being aware of this is the key I feel that after 7 years together I am much more empathetic to my wife when she finds it difficult to understand what I am saying, particularly when I use obscure English phrases Now these moments are part of our own micro culture sense of humourbrAlso, I understand the importance for me to use Farsi when I say to her that I love her and other intimate phrases brOverall I have found the experience of being in an intercultural relationship to be very rewarding As a child I was brought up to believe in the superiority of English culture and language Now I can see how ridiculous that view is My exposure to Persian food, music, poetry and people has opened my eyes to the value and historical contributions of other cultures brI am a better person for being in an intercultural relationship Comment from : @iansutherland9726 |

This talk has everything! It's hilarious ("Its just four words strung together that I'd hear on the streets in Australia") and also packs such a punch I never considered the impact that language can have when someone's first language is different, and I come from a Greek family Congratulations Maggie, this is such an awesome talk :) Comment from : @TheO835 |

‘Language isn’t just a tool for communication - it shapes our emotional experience, and our first language usually evokes the strongest one… does this mean, when I say “I love you” in English, it means less because I’m emotionally detached from it?’brbrThis is such a profound and loving talk - the stories shared within, and the conclusions at the end, have given me a whole new window of understanding into linguistically diverse couples brbr(and, a very funny talk, in English!) brbrAbsolutely wonderful Comment from : @Wrenasmir |
