I wonder how he deals with the unfortunate cases of people who were abused and kept from developing any language until adolescence These people, when removed from that abusive situation, never learn to speak any language, despite constant immersion and no mother tongue dominance

What qualifies this person to talk such rubbish, I teach Welsh to adults and had one student who moved here from Leicester at age of 63 and today uses Welsh as his daily language with his friends and neighbours He's active in the local community, darts, daytime art classes etc All in Welsh He's old, has never learnt another language but is MOTIVATED

@bridge2english Very trueNotice how children learn much faster, its not about rigidity its that adults have lots of preconceived notions, Some think We are too old Som try to bisect the new language with their mother tongue to find its meaning like a labrat, and children DONT do thatbecause they just learn it , it comes natural, they don't think so much before speaking its flowsAdults want to know languages through grammar ,and grammar is the last thing one should study about a new lang

After exposure to the mother tongue only the circuits for the mother tongue are reinforced, the rest of them wither away As a result when adults try to learn a new language they use subconscious cross-translation to their mother tongue and try to add the new language to the mother tongue, which is the main reason for failure For the majority of adults to be successful in acquiring fluency in a new language a special tool is needed that will help them to turn-off the cross-translation

@TheLovelyPiano Congratulations! Still, I fear that even with an influx of Hispanics that will eventually displace other Caucasians as the dominant ethnic group, multi-linguals will likely remain to be a minority in the US for a long time yet

I suspect there is the feeling that if the US were to openly embrace foreign languages and encourage people to learn them, there would be less reason for immigrants to learn English On a deeper level, I suspect that Washington also fears anything that would lead to greater regional identity and weaken its centralized power

acculturation is def a goal for most immigrants, but in schools, we are not merely talking about mastering conversational language, but also academic language and academic conceptsbilingual education, when administered correctly allows for language growth and academic content growthsimply immersing a student in the new language does not help with the input of new academic conceptshe doesn't discuss this at all
