We bought rental property with my wedding gift money I spent about less than $1000 on my wedding, cake, dress, venue, minister Mind you, that was 1975 but it was when weddings were going for $6000-8000 Buying property with my wedding money put us on a great path! Of course, years ago, but we still had to make the SAME decisions, relatively speaking We could have gone on an expensive honeymoon but went to family property in Maui instead It was a great honeymoon a YEAR after our wedding We CHOSE the long-term instead of the short-term satisfaction The only time we had issues in our marriage was when we overextended ourselves Thank God we figured out how to clean that up pretty quickly! I wonder if there are any studies that show if there is a correlation between wedding costs and those who subsequently divorce??brMy suspicion especially among those who pay for a wedding significantly beyond their earning capacity thus acquire debt, their possibility of divorce increases from the obvious hangover from a one day event that in some cases taking years to pay off! Your comments on how weddings used to be as compared to now put me in mind of something someone pointed out on the Straight Dope Message Board, which I frequent It was a thread on the 1991 remake of Father of the Bride and whether it was fair to portray Steve Martin's character George Banks (same name as the dad in Mary Poppins!) as unreasonable for wanting to keep the costs to a minimum--or at least not to go quite so over-the-top One poster pointed out something I hadn't thought of beforethat the father's sticker shock in the 1950 Spencer Tracy version made a lot more sense because Tracy's character, Stanley Banks, would've come from a time when, unless you were rich enough to make the society pages, weddings were mostly DIY affairs Stanley probably got married in a simple church ceremony with a reception in the church hall and the family cooking the food, or even a ceremony in the bride's own home with some cousin playing the wedding march on the piano and the bride wearing a hand-me-down wedding dress By the time his daughter got married, though, the country was in the post-war prosperity stage, and the wedding industrial complex was really starting to pick up speed, so Stanley was thrown for a loop by how much things had changed and how costly it all was But George Banks, of the 1991 version, would have gotten married in the seventies, after the wedding industrial complex had been entrenched for years, and he'd have most likely have had a rented venue, catering, etc Even if his own daughter's wedding was way over the top, he'd have at least been prepared for the idea that weddings can run into serious cash Comment from : @jenniferschillig3768 |

I just got engaged and am barely in the early stages of wedding planning Like most little girls, I dreamed of a big wedding when I was little Now, at thirty, I would prefer a micro-size wedding with close family and friends, a destination elopement, or going to City Hall and having a dinner party at a nice restaurant Don't get me wrong, as a Catholic, I want to get married at a church, have my parents walk me down the aisle, and have my fiancè and I wear our wedding attire He’s the one that wants a big wedding I prefer to invest in our marriage: have a honeymoon, buy a house, and provide for our children Relationships are about compromise, so I’m optimistic that we will have a small wedding the more we talk about it! I would spend $10-$20k if I were a millionaire My future wedding will cost around $1k That’s mostly on food, clothes and a photographer We’re getting married at the courthouse and having a dinner party afterwards Comment from : @kamkam |

Same in Poland, people often pay like 20- 25 000 $ for a wedding and I don't get it why it's seen as normal Comment from : @Rybvyn |

I dont know if you were serious but a save the date is for people who are out of state or country so they have time to plan on being there (taking time off work, booking flights) And invitation is sent to everyone about 6 weeks before the actual wedding which is not enough time for all that And sending all your invitations way in advance makes it so a lot of people forget about it amidst other important life things You dont rsvp to a save the date ofc but you should have an invitation rsvp because vendors/diy ers require a head count for food and seats Comment from : @Neon_Medusa |

If your spouse truly loved you, surely they'd respect your desire for a cheap, private, non-Instagrammed wedding that wouldn't bankrupt you and start your marriage off in the worst way possible? if not are you sure you're compatible enough with this person to go through with the marriage? Remember that 40 - 50 of 1st marriages end in divorce Comment from : @christiesanchez4013 |

If I ever get married, I want my wedding to be about me and my lover, not the sparkly decorations, not the 7 layer cake, not the 10 foot long dress, not the stone on the ring The real star is and should be the couple giving their promises to eachother There's no point in trying to impress with how much you're willing to spend (or waste) for a one day event It is about taking the next step into life with someone you love and trust (and the benefits that come with the "married" status) I grew up always putting my own needs and comfort aside, in order to have "excititng" celebrations inside my family I was never asked what cake flavor I like for my birthday, or who I want to be there for the celebration, my family didn't care, it was always about having the biggest cake (even if it tasted horrible), the most guests (also people I don't even know or like), the loudest music, the most unpersonal gifts, but never things that actually mattered to me, so I was always left feeling worse on my birthdays than on normal days Now, as an act of rebellion, I refuse to accept these things and instead insist on just baking cookies for myself and giving myself some time-out on my birthdays, away from everyone and their excpectations, and I feel like a new person But I digress, if I get married in the future, I won't fall into the pressure of trying to be the more impressive one, actually the opposite It's gonna be just us in our favorite clothes, my closest friends and family and nothing but the beautiful view into the ocean, eating homemade Schwarzwälder cake (my favorite) with the sound of the waves crashing in the distance, and no weird decorations lying around to create litter Simple and perfect Comment from : @taigalou |

There's no way in hellll I would spend 30 grand on a one day event when that would fund multiple trips to Europe, or a down payment on a house Comment from : @drew8235 |

omg i love this video so much, I'm trying to get married next year, and I really do not want to pay a crap ton of money on my wedding but i still want to celebrate it with my fiancé's family and mine without paying that crazy amt of money because I aint getting into debt for a 1 day party lol Comment from : @monicamunoz5248 |

I used to be obsessed with having a lavish wedding, but as I have matured I’d much rather have a simple celebration with my nearest and dearest without going into crazy debt Comment from : @jasmynelliott |

Why have a large, fancy, expensive, wedding, when you can just simply elope? brWhy not just invite two or three friends to go with you and your fiance to a Las Vegas wedding chapel and get hitched by an ordained Elvis?brYou can live stream the ceremony to the Multiverse, and your virtual guests can celebrate after the ceremony with the foods, the drinks, and the music that they enjoybrWith the money you save, you can use it for a down payment towards a house, home improvements, pay off student loans, save up for your children's college funds, or save it up for your retirementbrOnly a fool would want a traditional wedding Comment from : @rogerlambert9316 |

|
In my country it’s tradition for guests to give the bride or the groom a gold coin (that can be worth ranging from $130 to $300) or cash money in an envelope so that covers up the expenses of the wedding Even if it doesn’t cover all of the expenses it’s still pretty cool But everyone is still in debt all the time because they buy or rent a new house and buy all sorts of new furniture Comment from : @ty-zz9ic |

My husband and I spent $3k USD on our wedding I We got married at city hall for $60, had a small luncheon with close friends and family at a nice restaurant’s event space, and had an after party at our home brbrWe are financially stable, middle class, we just don’t like parties or large groups, attention, etcbrbrOur Micro wedding was perfect for us and we didn’t go into debt for a 4 hour event Comment from : @oliviaenglehart291 |

I live in Australia and I got married for just under 10k I wore my mum's dress, got married at the court house and had my reception in a pub with 40 guests It was not a perfect wedding but my marriage is and that is all that matters to my partner and me I wanted a marriage, not a wedding so I didn't care too much about any of it, just wanted my mum's cupcakes 😂 Comment from : @borderlinepup1603 |

We spent about 10k on a destination wedding that included our honeymoon We stayed there 10 days total It Was Incredible! Small wedding in the mountains, ate Famous Dave’s, did a lot of the work ourselves ❤ Comment from : @intuitive_duck |

Funny tidbit: Wedding ceremony gets its start in funerals The whole giving away the bride meant you literally lost a loved one as she was now part of the husband's family and was supposed to put their needs first It's also why you have bridal gifts its to support them in their next life Comment from : @Lostboy811 |

Thank you very much american i am from India we are also spending lot on marriages Comment from : @sureshbolagani9041 |

The purpose of save the dates is to give people lots of advance notice in case they have to take time off work Even if you aren’t doing a destination wedding, there are often family/friends who are coming in from out of town Or people might book their own vacation during that time not knowing your wedding will be happening These are sent out as early as possible to give as much notice, so the details that would be included on the full invitations might not be finalised yet brbrHowever, this doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of money; an email is fine Comment from : @shadowdancer909 |
|

If i ever get married i want it to be in a courthouse because I hate to be the center of attention i don't even celebrate my birthday Plus weddings are too expensive, in my culture wedding is mostly about how much you can spend and show off to your relatives and friends i don't like it, it always bothers me that people here think that being married is best thing that could happen to a person when in reality it's not the case for everyone Comment from : @May-yp4we |
|
|
My wedding was incredibly simple, and small I cannot emphasize enough how amazing that was The only money we spent was on the marriage license thingy, our wedding clothes (which are clothes we bought to rewear to most formal occasions) and our rings Extended family was upset but I knew they would cause drama one way or another! Comment from : @maryamdear2122 |
|
|
My wedding food came from Costco and Nando’s We had a great time Also, I never understood why it’s up to the bridal and groom parties to pay for their stuff like make up, hair, suits etc when they are usually following a theme requested by the bride and groom Like you’re giving me orders on my money? B**ch please… Comment from : @findAplaceToCallHome |

I would rather spend the $29K on a mortgage deposit ❤ Comment from : @misslinda772 |

This is why I truly admired couples with close, intimate wedding or a court house one The moment should be more about how you feel as a couple rather than how you want others to see you as a couple Comment from : @originaozz |

Considering that 2/3rds of marriages end in divorces, I would rather sign a paper and go on a trip I say this as a person who is single and not dating, so it may change lol Comment from : @jerodwolf5582 |

In India wedding is a social event Most of the times parents spend money But if one thinks of limiting the guest list you can be sure of being left out in society unless you are an important person Apart from social media pressure in addition to our traditional events , gifts and jewellery western events and rings are also added Which just adds to the expense Comment from : @lakhwinderkaur6882 |

I have no friends and a tiny family, so like it or not, an extravagant wedding isn't something I'll ever be able to choose It sometimes bothers me, but I'm not the kind of person to want to spend almost a year's salary on one day Comment from : @hayleygerbil3109 |

|
There is nothing for us common law folks to celebrate So I guess I wont be having a "wedding" I wish, as one of the commenters below said, that we celebrated milestones instead like "together for 20 years, together for 30 years, etc" with a similar vibe Comment from : @os2841 |
|
|
I want to have a wedding because I have never celebrate anything big in my life People normally don't congratulate me of my achievements, no birthdays and my parents didn't celebrate birthdays, nothing brHowever, I do not want to invite random people as is normal for African weddings and spend over £10k for one day That's a waste of money brAlso the word "Wedding" spikes the prices up significantly For example if you want a wedding cake, don't mention the bakery/person is a wedding cake, say is just a normal cake and add the decorations yourself later or instead of cake, have a cheese layer or sushi "cake" brMy hardest thing will be to find a small cute place to host a wedding Comment from : @Usagi1017 |

11:40 now I understand why the advice she gives is so shallow and basic She doesn't have the understanding to give real analysis based expertise brbrWhile you could argue that not all corporations are evil, it's willfully ignorant to act like many corporations don't actively engage in evil behavior Comment from : @gordvpn481 |
