If you are going to make music your life i think you should take the time to learn it No excuses You can communicate with every other type of musician It can only stand to make you a better musician

Just a thought on when the ability to read music would be useful: when finding songs/tunes etc in old music books which were invariably written down in notation Trying to establish the melody without some knowledge would be difficult

I learned to read music when I was younger, so still can I've found it really useful when you get songbooks that show tab and the score I'm a "mature" (in age at least) learner so any help is a bonus!😂

You saved your best point for last! I dont think it has much to do with sight reading, just a statement that musicality and reading are different things Both are important in different waysbut if i have to choose one its musicality Said by someone with a foot in both camps on different instruments

My understanding is that the 3 guitarists from The Beatles couldn't read music It worked out On the other hand I am slowly learning theory etc because it's interesting Still haven't nailed barre chords yet, though

The biggest advantage to being able to read notes is that you can learn a song you've never heard, is my opinion I'd say that is a very big advantage And you dont have to be able to sight read fluently to learn a song from notation either I dont I read notation like a 10 year old reads the financial sections of newspapers :)brFrom the tabs I have seen, you cant learn a song you havent heardbrbrActually, it might be a fun idea to get someone who can sight read notes and someone who cn sight read tabs to pick a melody/song none of them have heard and have them learn it from the page only That will absolutely settle that argument, I should think

It's like a lot of things that people just think it has to be one or the otherdoing both is the best I say Reading music is not hard to learn and if you do it's a nice feather in your cap plus you can always refer to tab and go back and forth, but reading music gives you great perspective on what it is you're actually doing and you're getting in touch with an ancient tradition Anyone interested in leaning it's not hard to teach yourself, Mel Bay Guitar Method Grade 1, go through it beginning to end without skipping around and in a few months time you'll know how to read It's an old book that lot's of professionals started out on

This is timely I learnt to read basic sheet music in high school I've been learning some solos using tabs recently but I'm keen on developing my guitar skills enough to do session work, and thought you'd have to be able to read sheet music to do that I think I'll still relearn reading traditional sheet music, 'cos it's always good to keep learning :)
