When you showed that shilling and said it was minted in the US it made me look it up to see if there had been any mix ups, since one of my favorite types of errors is incorrect planchets From what I could find, there are some that were struck on war nickel planchets by accident, which I think is awesome :D

In today's day and age, the silver content, weight, mintage and value of nearly any foreign coin on the planet is just a couple clicks away I don't understand why you're that reserved when it comes to the amazing and wonderful variety of foreign coinage

I shared US stamps and world coins with my third graders over 34 years The aspect of collecting, on top of the interesting subjects depicted, there is a hierarchy as well as different approaches to both hobbies When ancient coins are discovered, it helps historians date events The tiny caches are a good indicator that mercenaries have been paid and are returning home Of course, some didn’t make it or had to abandon their coin My students were quite gifted They were attracted to understanding systems, history, and geography

@13:21 I believe the reference is to "billon" a low grade alloy of gold or silver predominantly containing a base metal, like copper The well known Mexican 1 peso coins that are 10 percent silver are billon and would look like yellow brass if not for a pickling process that leaves a very thin layer of silver on the surface of the planchet before striking Billon coins generally have zero actual melt value as the silver costs more to refine out than the silver content is worth

That 1981 Catalog of World Coins you're using as a base to photograph coins on has, I believe my good, late friend Charles Casey listed in the credits He was quite an interesting guy and besides being an authority on ancient and medieval coins was a professional photographer He had sources for modern South American and Central American coins, including mint officials and provided many photographs for coins that previously had only been catalogued without images

This is only the second comment I have ever left on you tube but boy oh boysell your coins in lots or countries on e-bay you will get way better money than a coin shop I have over 5 thousand dollars in world coins all marked with country date and silver content and a lot of these coins are over a hundred dollars way over melt value I don't like to hear such nonsense and a lot of people have started to collect world silver You lose out on a lot of business just by this kind of nonsense Thanks

I'm in Texas, but I like Australian pre-decimal coins I lived in Australia for some 30 years, but didn't collect when I was there, I guess I'm backwards; there I cherished US coins, but here I like the Aussie ones better Sadly I have no coin shop local to me, closest ones are in Dallas & I don't like driving there, so mostly I buy & sell on Ebay Melt value isn't all that important to me, but it is a consideration; I collect just to have the coins to look at, and want to get at least one of every coin that's been produced It's a great hobby, and I've found some great coins for a bargain- but OTOH I've paid a lot for some coins worth not so much, just to fill a gap in my collection Thanks for a great video, & I sure wish that big bag of coins was in my hands!

I’ve bought world coins over the years Some of it I make into pins but I like to bury the useless stuff in the park across the street I wash dishes and watch the coin shooters find them and scratch their heads But my first motivation was to get them into the hands of my 3rd grade students Like your guest, they were enthused and asked many questions Once, a parent returned a coin at conference time Her son had run his fingers through a few thousand coins before he settled on a token that read”Heads I win, Tails you lose” Graphically appealing to an impressionable boy She asked if he could trade it for another one less risque Well Of course The boy studied the hoard even closer and found a Vietnamese coin with some of the basest words in English Hint: the words sounded Dutch I got the last laugh 😂 Fun to see the guy who might be packing the Constitutional silver I’ve been buying latelybrbrI got a 1948 shilling in my change at an Indian restaurant in England I have these 50 years later Love this hobby for its history Thanks again Coin Help You
