George Steinbrenner was ultimately a mixed bag in fairness He was awful in some things, trading away young talent for players that were over the hill or soon would be, meddling and overuling his GM's, and is a main cause for the Yankee drought in the 80s and their failure to win another world series from 02-08 People forget the standing ovation in Yankee Stadium when Bob Sheppard announced his "lifetime ban", how the man was truly despised by Yankee fans at that time His image softened after his return, even Seinfeld helped with that perception (which to George's credit, he had humility and could enjoy being made fun of) brbrThere's also his incredible generosity that was relatively unknown until after his death, that was farther reaching than anyone could imagine, something he kept silent about in life as he felt publicizing such things meant you weren't doing them for the right reasons There's also the story of the long time Yankee employee who started out as a kid busted by George doing graffiti on the side of Yankee Stadium Instead of calling the cops, George gave him a job that turned into a decades long careerbrbrFact is George was not the best owner or person, but he had his good qualities and was far from the worst He also had a passionate love for the team which no one could ever doubt about That love sometimes led him to bad decisions, but that passion is the thing Yankee fans miss He was a larger than life character who spoke his mind and wore his heart on his sleeve I remember the boss fondly because of it, but it is important to remember the whole story, not just the bright spots Great video

That finish was pretty tough on George almost dismissive of him as a viable owner Was he flawed? For sure and he owned many of his faults! With that said he was the architect of 7 Yankees World Series Championships and 11 AL Pennants! That is not something to brush off!

When I was a kid in NY, Winfield was the guest speaker at our Little League dinner He was one of the best speakers we had and was great with everyone He wound up using kids from our league to participate in events for his foundation I was one of them and was in three different events Great memories
