@mencken8
Keep in mind that currency in $100 and even $50 denominations may not be that useful in the circumstances discussed Even in “normal times” some places will not accept large bills For much of a cash reserve, think the good old $20 bill
Comment from : @mencken8

@bjh8036

@heisenberg2966
Having “ Emergency Money “, at Home is not as Important as having “ Emergency Food “ at Home So, Go Purchase a Large Cooler, and place Bottle Water, Peanut Butter, Tuna Fish, Sardines, Crackers, Beef Jerky Sticks, Canned Soup, Canned Veggies, Canned Potatoes, Canned Corn, Canned Spinach, Powdered Milk, Powdered Eggs and a Can Opener, in that Cooler( buy a Cooler with Wheels ), and have it Ready to Go, in case of an Emergency, because Supermarkets and Convenient Stores, might be Closed Also, Go purchase a (2) 5 Gallon Fuel Tanks, fill them with Gas, and keep them in a Safe Place( ideally, Away from your house ), and have them Ready, just in case Gas is not Available at Any Gas Stations nearby
Comment from : @heisenberg2966

Comment from : @UllrsHunter

@zulusmith
I have several bottles of whiskey that I can use for bartering
Comment from : @zulusmith

@joshperkins197
I am considering physical gold in addition to a relatively small amount of cash A friend of mine had a house fire last year and all of the cash in his fire rated safe burned due to the high heat inside the safe This makes me very uneasy about keeping $10k or something in cash Gold melts at almost 2000 F, so it will survive a house fire And you can turn gold into cash at almost any jewelry, pawn or coin shop Plus 4oz of gold is easier to hide than $10k in mixed bills
Comment from : @joshperkins197

@July41776
During the August 2003 blackout in the northeast it was around three days… cash was king
Comment from : @July41776

If I have to "run" because of a natural disaster, I make sure that I have one month's pay in cash so that I can cover expenses while "on the road" Hurricane Katrina taught me this
Comment from : @GVan1953

@HarleyRiderMC
Keep it simple Prepare early but know you can’t prepare for everything Do a risk assessment; what is probable, not what is possible Make a “Go-Bag with your known essentials, medications, personal hygiene articles, important papers, etc Don’t forget about your pets essential needs Have $1,000 to $2,500 in small bills and a firearm with extra ammo you are competent along with a trauma/first aid kit Keep your vehicles in good working condition with full tanks of gas
Comment from : @HarleyRiderMC

@avengingemmapeel
Yeah, sure, have some cash However, make sure you have a Halo Bolt so you can plug in your Ninja 5-in-1 to make a hot meal if the electricity goes out AND make sure you have the fixings for a week's worth of meals in your pantry!
Comment from : @avengingemmapeel

@BellsWatson
Being a boomer I carry around $100 in my wallet (the wife the same) and we have several thousands in the house We have credit cards but I don't like using a credit card for small purchases (the cards are paid off each month)
Comment from : @BellsWatson

@hemantparakh6462
No Emergency Cash means Relocation because there could be Loans and Unavoidable Loans
Comment from : @hemantparakh6462

@gunsnstuff4040
Whatever amount you decide, plenty of small bills always give an advantage to avoid not getting change Not everyone will have change for your Ben Franklin, especially in a SHTF situationbrbr However a few Franklins are not bad to have for a larger transactionbrbrI recommend a $2,000 emergency cash on hand that consists of :br-br $100 in singles, $100 in Fives, $100 in Tens, $700 in Twenty's , $500 in Fifty's, $500 in Hundred's Even adding a roll or two of quarters helps
Comment from : @gunsnstuff4040

@GoldieLott62
In my experience when the power is out the grocery stores are closed because the registers are run by computers When this happens, having cash does not help
Comment from : @GoldieLott62

@dabeage
Or lets say, the banks fail
Comment from : @dabeage

@nicolerichter-smith2573
Here is why cash and physical checks still are king Had to have my car towed, and paid in cash This saved me the card fee And our furnace went out Had a few physical checks, and was able to write a check for the repairs I use debit and credit too, but a good ol benjamin bill speaks volumes in an emergency
Comment from : @nicolerichter-smith2573

@rickyiglesias5384
Just do what Chris Rock said 30 years ago: hide your valuable in your books
Comment from : @rickyiglesias5384

@lindashobe-e7j

Comment from : @lindashobe-e7j

@ra1der5
Without power, what works? Not saying we shouldn’t have cash on hand, but a lot of things… gas pumps, cash registers, bar code scanners… will not work without power When power goes out in our area, supermarkets lock their doors
Comment from : @ra1der5

@paulj8740
I use cash as my carpet padding so all I have to do is pull back my carpets and collect it all
Comment from : @paulj8740

@patroberts5449
What I am concerned about is that with the cash we have in an emergency that so many people have no idea how to count out and give change!! Clueless! Shouldn’t we all be able to do that and understand it just like reading a regular clock not just seeing the digital numbers
