Hey Kale, your's is the best advice on surfing I've ever seen I'm 76, been surfing in some manner or form since 1965 Longboard skates changed it all for me for the better in early 90s and your tutorials on surf sk8s are tops Yes that big black clean wall at 12ft plus still scares me big time but what you say is spot on Very impressed Stay stoked, Donny stillstoked longboards uk Comment from : @LowerWyeFishing |

Surfskating has allowed me to feel the movements almost immediately I’ve been able to work on pumping, turning, balance, positioning So good! Comment from : @SamuelJIMarks |

give a video and explanation on paddling to catch a wave, can you paddle to long when trying to catch a wave should you jump up instantly or wait till the wave grabs you,i think this is everybodies biggest make or break to the window of surfing for begginners, once you get it you get it but some people take years to get it,obviously surfboard size, wave size and conditions are important, hand position, jumping up with a forward lunge and paddling in the direction you want to go Comment from : @extremejoker3535 |

Thanks Kale, I really appreciate your advice I’m in my mid fifties now and last surfed over forty years ago I purchased a board that I could afford and it was the wrong board It was such a struggle to paddle and catch a wave I eventually quit and upon reflection, had I chosen a more suitable board, I may have had forty years of surfing experience by now Now, I’m wanting to try again Years later with arthritis in my body, I want to try an activity that’s kinder on my body than the ones I’ve been doing for decades I don’t expect to be carving waves like the pros and the ideal of cruising on a longboard is appealing these days The tip of using a skateboard to accelerate my learning is great (also skated as a kid), however the thought of broken bones is real Might have to pad up And, as you rightly pointed out, you can teach an old dog new tricks As a muso, I’ve found that it helps keep your mind plastic and always learning new things, such as songs, styles, techniques or instruments The processes can be applied to many things in life Comment from : @Andrew-qc9xw |

Do I need to know how to skate? Concrete is hard Comment from : @rimees |

I have a question about Surf skating I have a couple of surf skates and really enjoyed them BUT I skate goofy but surf regular…I’ve tried doing both the other way around - surf goofy and skate regular and both feel super unnatural So my question is…if I surf and skate on opposite sides …is surf skating still good for my surfing?????? Or might it actually be counterproductive????? Comment from : @andyhcape |

what is your opinion on balance boards to improve balance? you think it's worth it? There's hardly any place to use a surfskate properly here in Switzerland, so I thought a balance board might be something worth getting Comment from : @misch5908 |

Great info and big thanks I like the way you communicate, clearly defining and breaking down each point I’m now reproaching surfing once again after a layoff for some years to a number of operations due to injuries to both legs, which of course has ongoing affects to spine, muscle groups, etc brSo my approach has been pool training, Beach training, bodysurfing to regain stability and muscle condition as well as water/surf awareness A slow road to get back to the level I used to surf Goals are a good thing brMy quiver is no longer appropriate and I’ll be selling of 4 boards to purchase 2 that would be appropriate At 61, I still find solace and a strong connection with the ocean on all levels Thanks again and I’m now subscribe and look forward to more of your vids Cheers Comment from : @johnkovacs2388 |

Great tips, totally agree, I've noticed with gradual exposure to bigger waves they became less intimidating I have three boards, 7'6",6'6"and a 5'6",i can't manage the 5,6 at all, 6'6" i can barely manage to get onto waves without the buoyancy, and i can't manage steeper faces with the 6,6 The 7,6 is spot on, stable enough to get up and ride the waves, even the big broad less steep waves, though the other day i managed a couple of relatively steep waves on it Comment from : @alanmagee81 |
|
To solve the volume vs performance issue could a board be shaped to have volume through the midsection and nose but stepped down thin rails ? Or am I missing the point?? Comment from : @davehollin6477 |

Hi Kale, thanks so much for all your videos I love your surf skate program and am using it at by my pump track Regarding board volume: I want to keep my volume high 31liters @ 60kg (intermediate), but it makes duck diving pretty tough in 5ft Stick it out or drop the volume, kind of a catch 22 Comment from : @youstoplaughingrightmao7682 |
|

I liked the video, however you didn't say anything about the conjunction of using your arms or your upper body with your turns and maneuvers depending on what you want to do Although you were using them to surfskate Comment from : @perryabedor39 |

|
I surfed a bit in my teens and early twenties but nothing since I’m going to Costa Rica to visit my Grandkids (yes I’m 77) and plan to surf with them as they learn This video and others of yours take a break-it-down approach which I love in my current sport of rowing Thanks for this (no, I don’t and won’t skateboard) and for encouraging people “of any age” to get out there Wish me luck! Comment from : @cathykemper6323 |
|
Thanks for all the tips Kale! I'm really glad to see that I've already applied some of them to my practice I've made changes in my frequency, out of the water practice (with the surf skate), and finally on my board size and volume I have a 6'6", 47L board now and it gave me the confidence I needed to catch more waves and be more stable while I surf them However, I'm having a hard time duck diving, since I'm not a tall/strong girl 😅 The volume of the board makes it really hard to push it through the waves and I started to get really tired on my sessions Sometimes I just let go of the board and just cross underwater or I flip over - and it can bother other surfers Does anyone have tips to help me with it? I'm surfing in the south of Brazil and here we don't always have clean easy beginners conditions, so I find myself in some really tricky situations Let me know cause I'm trying to not lose motivation Comment from : @raissacolonetti1611 |
