My parents were born in NL and didn’t teach myself and siblings bc the English kindergarten teacher was against it bc my brother struggled with English I’ve always been interested in learning the Dutch language I know quite a lot of Dutch words especially when I lived at home I usually got the notion what was said But I just started again The G sound is very hard to say but I can say Groengen easy bc my mom is from there I know I spelled it wrong The J in the end of words are hard too but I know how to pronounce it in the like the name Jan brI’m glad I found your video Every little bit helps I’m trying to be able to talk to my 87 year old mom soon Tot Ziens😘

the verb one gets me, we in english would say i do not eat but dutch would say ik eet niet, diretly translating to I eet NOT, I find it funny having not knowing if the answer is yes or no until the end of the sentence rater than the front like us impatient english speakers

Hii! I live in the Netherlands but I’m a Friesian so I speak Fries for my first language but in public settings I speak Dutch I have the tendency to switch if I hear an accent, for me it goes automatic and fast So I think people switch to English because we don’t realize It’s just a feeling and goes automatically I think your Dutch is so good and I like you learnt and wanted to learn😊

As for the speaking English part I just say the first thing that comes to mind if the person I am talking too speaks both languages brIdk if it is because most of the people I interact with speak English but when 1 English word slips between the cracks than suddenly everything seems to default to English too

My mom isn't Dutch, but she is from Germany & it is like that with the English language I think for efficiency & they want to be sure that you completely understand them & they completely understand you because English is an international language- it's possible that they don't feel like giving a lesson- i don't mean that rudely, just that it's how they may feel Also, anyone gets excited if they meet a native speaker from another country, & it's also a language they know- so the excitement to engage in a second language is mutual- you just may be that opportunity for them :)

Very interesting about the suffixes and what not, as an American, when I get into Italian, Portuguese my head starts to spin with all the grammar rules but this Dutch, I’m starting to feel at home 😂

I love learning Dutch as an English person (have been learning for 5 years)brHowever one surprise I have is that in English we are used to so many non-native speakers, that we recognise that speakers from certain places can’t make certain sounds as easily Yet we are so used to this “mispronunciation” that we translate it properly anyway In Dutch there are far fewer foreign speakers, so if you can’t pronounce the “ui” in onion or talk in the back of your throat they simply will not understand you I find this quite hard when I try to speak with someone new that isn’t as forgiving

Dutch people speaking English is partially because:br1: It's quite easy, it's a very related language and you get a lot of contact with itbr2: They're secretly really proud that they can speak it, so they're actually secretly showing off It's the same emotions which actually cause the "please learn Dutch/infesting any video with Dutch mention" funnily enoughbrI know I do these things, but I'm bilingual Dutch/English, so it may be slightly different for mebrbrAlso I don't think Dutch is that weird about the formal/informal, it's more English that's weird for not having that (anymore, you used to be formal and thee informal, the more you know), especially as a Germanic language And Australian English is especially laid back, to a nigh-ridiculous degree actually I love itbrBut in Dutch you can get away with calling people "je" after a while, a bit of charisma (or rizz if you prefer) and I don't know exactly I'm very social proficient by accident But apparently that's less the case in German and the like So I don't think Dutch is that weird to be honest But I definitely see how an Ozzie would be caught ofguard by that!brbrAny how's, I loved this video!brYou're very accurate, yet very wholesome as well! I am currently learning Dutch and I I happen to speak both English and German as second languages Dutch is closer to German than English and not the other way around! brI would even dare to say Dutch is a muddled German with some English words It sounds like the Dutch took the languages of their neighboring countries ( Britain and Germany) and mixed them together changing a tad their sounds and spelling (Initially, I even questioned why Dutch is considered a language and not a German dialect) brSome new Dutch words I encounter, for example, I know already their meaning because I KNOW their corresponding German word! The Dutch structure also seems “stolen”from German

I'm friends with a dutch person, the whole English thing is just part of the dutch culture of "wanting to make things easy for you" like they dont want their time wasted so they'll do what is easiest to them, which is to speak English instead of trying to understand your incomplete or flat out wrong dutch sentences (Even if you more or less are getting your point across)

The first thing to know about learning Dutch is that everyone in the Netherlands would immediately recognise you as a foreigner, and most of the mistakes you've made would be forgiven with a big smile

Every English word that has a -tion at the end has a -tion in German English -ly is in German -lich "friendly is "freundlich" Sometimes English -ly is German -ig similar to Dutch -ig Low German is very similar to Dutch, not English Low and High German have the same syntax as Dutch Most Low German words have a very similar cognate in Dutch High German underwent a regular consonant change, so that even a High German speaker can understand many Dutch words in the written form brAs you can see: English "little" is "weinig" in Dutch, "wenig" in German English has largely moved away from the West Germanic languages Dutch and German

We dutch, and I think really every non-native English speaker around the globe, assume "My English is better than your $local" so just for the sake of efficiency, we really try to steer into English There's not many people who take the effort to learn dutch to such a level as to beat our English (because literally, why would they?) so yeah We do however appreciate everyone's efforts in trying to learn a bit of dutch, because indeed, we do know how difficult it it for foreigners But just for efficiency's sake, English is best in 99,6 of cases It really takes a level of proficiency like yours, to actually acknowledge, okay Dutch is better here Really love how well you do it <3

If I speak a language I think in that language too after a short adaptation time That makes it more convenient for me to speak English to a person who does not speak Dutch at a certain high level but does speak English So it is efficiency and lazyness, I think This is also true for German but about French I am not sure

2:33 I am 100 Dutch 🇳🇱 (born and raised) and most of us are very pragmatic and do not want to waste too much time on anything UNLESS you want to change it in to a “challenge” (that works 9 out of 10 times psychological speaking)

As a German, I think that the ridiculously long words in our language come from more exposure to the West Slavic, and Uralic languages But our language is also incredibly close to Dutch

Hi,brI had a huge problem with the Dutch interrogatives 'hoe' and 'wie'brbr- how (EN)br- wie (D)br- hoe (NL)br[sounding a little like the English "who"]brbr- who (EN)br- wer (D)br- wie (NL)br[sounding exactly like the german "wie", but meaning something completely different, see above]brbrI got used to it at a certain point, but it took quite a while

Why do they switch: they want to speak English; they want to make it easy for you because your dutch is terrible and their English is great so lets just talk in English There is an American who learned Spanish who said the same thing about speaking Spanish to Spanish speakers - he would talk in Spanish and they would reply in English He told me, this only changed and stayed in Spanish when he reached an undefined level of Spanish proficiency and the convo could stay in full throttle Spanish

I was born in Holland, raised from 7 years old in USA and now live with my husband in Canada He is Canadian born of Dutch parents who immigrated to Canada before he was born, obviously Anyway, needless to say my Dutch is very rusty and although I understand basics from having spoken it as a child, it is difficult to speak or listen to things of adult matters such as listening/comprehending the news or matters of business or politics etc Husband and I both have cousins in the Netherlands so we like to visit as often as we can and with each visit my Dutch improves a little, but I try to improve by listening to Dutch reports and watching Dutch language videos as much as I can to keep improving I understand what you say about Dutch people wanting to speak English Part of the reason for it, I believe, is because they want to be helpful, and if they see it is too much of a struggle they think they can help by simply going to English Another reason is we like to show off a bit, and that is true for native Dutch speakers who can speak English My experience is they like to show that they can speak English, but also it is good practice for them to be able to use the language so they improve as well and so not get rusty like I did with my Dutch usage I agree that the Dutch are wonderful people ❤we love going and immersing in the wonderful culture and sights and people every time we visit You are very lucky you get to live in such a sweet little country I subscribed so maybe I can learn more Dutch as I learn with you ❤️🙏

As language teacher I find it infuriating when people think strangers should be their language exchange partners and seem surprised or offended when people don't have the time or energy for that They also don't necessarily know that you're trying to practice Oftentimes people will use English because they think that it will help you to understand them better and they would rather use your first language (and put themselves in the "disadvantage" of being the non-native speaker)

Jokes aside, I think one of the main causes of this is because multilingualism is very common in the Netherlands According to trustworthy statistics 70 of Dutch people speak German on atleast a basic level, 30 for French and more than 90 for English I usually can't stand speaking really slow Dutch with someone, so I'd rather just switch languages if I can

Not just that australian is more relaxed, english itself does not have polite and formal pronouns, it is just "you" And it is really not that hard in dutch We only have 'je/jij' and 'U' Admitted, there is a bit of a formal vs informal language: 'goeiemorgen' vs 'goedemorgen' but as long ascthevproper formal or informal pronoun isvused it isvfine We are also very forgiving for foreigners who 'screw up'
