People watching this should read a book called Race War In High School by Harold Saltzman Take it with a grain of salt when you read it But know that the violence described is real I think a lot of people might find it shocking especially when they realize that what's depicted in the book wasn't just happening in Brooklyn or even just NY, but also in Philly, DC, Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago, LA and many other places simultaneously for more than a decade

As someone who has seen the same tactic of holding back "the guard" or the more militarized police back from restoring order, I can see how calculated this strategy was Every small offence has the potential of developing further, but it can be mitigated That's the whole reason we even have the police This has nothing to do with race or anything By making sure emergency services were suspended, they emboldened the rioters, they made regular citizens more vulnerable, and contributed to a sense of helplessness This was a state failure
