I am American (Californian, actually if that makes a difference) Our English classes combined literature and grammar In the lower grades spelling was emphasized too (English is incredibly difficult to spell, and I still have trouble - and I appreciate the consistency of German spelling) I remember having a lot of grammar in middle school - even sentence diagraming Grammar also was woven into writing practice
