NASA has the highest ROI out of any investment the government can make The problem with this is, as the problem is with most human affairs, is that most humans are stupid You can't trust a majority of humans to make the right choices Humanity has advanced because of the work of a tiny minority, and it's obvious to smart people that investing in science, technology, infrastructure, education, etc will have a huge return The problem is, you need a democracy to have a functioning society, and most people are dumb It's a paradox and it's what keeps us stuck until one individual or a small group just gets enough wealth/power to actually move humanity forward independent of a government, eg Elon Musk Any politician who comes out in strong defense of increasing the NASA budget will be laughed at, because you know we have problems on Earth As I said, dumb people They'll be the end of us
