Tip for practicing: place 3 pennies on the table If you play the passage correct, move a penny to a new pile If you mess up move a penny back If your stuck and cant move pennies ever, your probably playing too fast Comment from : @Synthesized05 |

If you’re playing cmajor and practicing the scales you would on right hand play 12312345 CDEFABC knowing that do you now keep the thumb under fingering at EF when switching to/from F so long as the piece is in cmajor? Is that the point of knowing key-it’s telling us the most likely fingering? ThanksbrbrI’m going to try the two bar 7 times practice, that seems to be a great tip Thanks again Comment from : @sw6118 |

Some schools of thought say finger independence is a fallacy and inevitably leads to tension ?? Comment from : @Gilloringsend |

Tip: practice without caring about the tempo and once you master the notes of the song youre learning start practicing using methronome, or you may stress out Comment from : @slimyk_tq |

The beauty of internet: you get unlimited teachings hours, from unlimited teachers brTo learn, you need the open mindset and the will to actively seek improvements The method of how to get the knowledge is irrelevant (for hobbyist at least) Whats more important is you enjoy the journey you're on brNot sure why some teachers keep categorizing the "self-taught" pianist (whatever that means) Comment from : @Arguyle20 |

OMG I took piano as an adult, after teaching myself the basics as a child I have not had anyone teach me technique, fingering, or to stress the importance of metronome usage and how to practice efficiently Essentially I was practicing incorrectly and so was Teaching myself how to not be able to get through the whole piece without mistakes I finally quit! So encouraged to have EXPLICIT methods to use!!!!THANK YOU Comment from : @donnaslaughter4096 |

I am an amateur pianist but I have had teachers for several years What I have learned now that I play on my own is to practice SLOWLY in small sections I also start with the bars that have given me trouble I don’t necessarily start at the beginning When I get into trouble is usually when I have started too quickly, too soon Scales and arpeggios are a must Never start a piece if you don’t know the key it’s in All of this has helped me Comment from : @LiliVG |

I have a quesiton about the memorization part: I am one month in and I am trying to learn a simplified version of Amélie's "Comptine d'un autre été" (the version from Pianote here on youtube) I learned it for a week now and I can play the first 12 bars now I learned it by reading the notes and also watching the video for fingering But by now, I just play it all on autopilot the left hand and also I know what keys I need to hit with my right So I am actually not looking at the sheet music anymore at all - I am mainly struggling with timing and aligning them is that bad that I am not actively "reading" the notes anymore but just have it memorized? Comment from : @no-trick-pony |

I think you must have been watching me! I have most of these problems and ive been practising my poor technique for years Your video is great because it highlights them and gives me hints on how i can cure them I can read music fine But i have poor fingering, unnevenness of tempo and sound ( volume) I do practise two bars at a rime Adding 2 more bars after several sessions of playing what ive practised so far brI have a strange problem of a 'flying' little finger If im not using the little finger for a bar, it sticks up and moves about of its own accord I can't wait to try your holding down the 5 keys and playing one-at-a-time Comment from : @philipsamways562 |
Its interesting how 2 completely different things can intersect On #1 me personally, it is the exact same problem when solving any puzzles Like in video games or physical puzzles Take the rubix cube There are certain moves made in a specific order that accomplish something And if you know that enough, you can think, "Do ______" and your brain just does it Comment from : @Thecoolgaming1000 |

I just ordered a amazing piano, Steinway D Spirio It should deliver in Feb I am 77 man love music But I never learn piano - perhaps one month when I was young I decide to learn it now before I die! I love your video and I will watch and practice it when my piano delivered! Thank you Comment from : @bennylee999 |
I can never use metronomes how do i get used to them and how do i exactly use them? Comment from : @nuggwt6324 |
I struggle with fingering placement transitions Like when my hand needs to shift an octive higher or lower If it makes sense, it’s like my fingers get lost and I have to look down at the keys, which causes me to lose the beat Any suggestions? Comment from : @kellynowak8332 |
I know I am 3 years late to the party but as a self taught pianist (for about 6 years now - as a casual player), I can say with confidence that you have hit the nail on its head I am guilty of having relied on Synthesia, but most importantly I learned a hard piece way too soon (Fantaisie Impromptu Op66 by Chopin) and while I can play it quite well now, I still struggle a lot with tension in my hands and fingers (I have super small hands sadly, which doesn’t help at all) and this over the years has given me a terrible tendinitis which I can’t get rid off This tendinitis impedes me from learning harder pieces, not to mention my lack of technique as you pointed out I will take your advice and start doing these things a bit better from now on Learning to read sheet music will probably be the most daunting thing to do, going back to zero will be quite hard and demotivating, just like you said as well Anyways, always striving for improvement is the best one can do! Cheers, thank you so much still! Greetings from Italy!!! Comment from : @KevinS47 |

Thank you Jazer, this is very enlightening Your videos always were, thank you Comment from : @JesusGamayon |

Well i've played drums and it helped soo much now I can do the basic polyrithms and my sense of rythm is really good so I don't just arbitrarilly change beat Also, playing by listening and repeating has a lot of avantages, for example building intuition and helping to play by ear Comment from : @Lucas-c4v8g |

I have been playing for 7-8 months now and have been using Skoove piano app which has taught me so much! I know the concepts of proper fingering I think, and I think my technique is quite OK It doesn’t take me forever to learn a piece but what does take me long to do is to play at the right intended tempo I play a piece many times over for hours, but I often press the wrong keys inadvertently because my mind is not fast enough, so when I play Für Elise for example I can play the opening piece almost flawlessly, but not as fast as Jazer or any real pianist does It’s not that I don’t know what the correct tempo is, it’s just that the tempo is too fast and my fingers can’t cope with the fast changes Comment from : @Stoxoz |
I know no music theory and cant ever read sheet music brbrAt the end of the day musics about havin fun, and theres some real value it trying to learn pieces that are too hard brbrSure you might not make a career out of it but too many people treat it like a job and quit cause of thatbrbrBut yeah my rythm could use a little more consistency brhahaha Comment from : @adammoutii2437 |

That wristwatch thing reminded me of the time my piano teacher would tap my arm lightly when I play to keep me in tempo Strangely enough, I always had trouble playing even with a metronome My teachers all get annoyed when I couldn't follow the beat of the metronome, and so they had to resort to tapping my arm to make me "feel the tempo" since I can't hear it I would highly recommend kids get the metronome watch if they still can't get it down even with a metronome Comment from : @Gunbardo |
Do you think a self tought pianist can learn sereande by schubert from only copying the notes visually from a video? I cant read sheet music as i dont have time Ive learnt a few pieces this way Comment from : @Peshchian |

Just started yesterday playing small sections of 2 songs that I have been playing a long time not being able to get rid of the mistakes Playing the weak areas 7 times makes a difference That has been my biggest takeaway so far When I mess up on number 6, I start all over counting I think this has been my biggest obstacle It will also boost the confidence level to sit and play Thank you Comment from : @junefrederick254 |

Thank you for precious tips Comment from : @clarawiborg652 |

I broke my right fourth metacarpal at work a couple of years ago The front half of the fracture slid under the back part, reforming the angle of my fourth finger This really affects my right hand independence in many tasks in life One of the many reasons why I finally purchased a piano was to use it to try to regain dexterity in my right hand I hope it does not hamper me from progressing as far as I'd like As for now, I have chosen to commit to practice everyday for one year without worrying about how far I get I will just enjoy the process I am working through Alfred's Premier Piano Express: Books 1 and 2 I played trombone for 7 years in school Now as an adult I'm learning the piano Comment from : @FredHenry1850 |

the thing is, self-teaching itself is a big pitfall on its own since contrary to popular beliefs, piano is not an instrument that you can simply learn on your own if you don't have any sort of prior knowledges Even if you do have experiences playing a different instrument, the technical aspect of that instrument simply cannot be transferred to piano, although you'll have an edge when it comes to the musical aspects If your goal is to reach a high level, having a teacher is a must since you need someone to provide you feedbacks so you don't end up developing bad habits or getting frustrated because you don't know your true level and ended up picking a piece that's way beyond your skills It's not uncommon at all for many self-taught beginners to experience Dunning-Kruger effect (a common cognitive bias in which ppl think they're more capable than they actually are) and because of this, it's important to have a professional that can accurately gauge your skill level and assign you pieces accordingly Only after you have taken lessons for a long time, self-teaching becomes more viable as at that point you'll have a better foundation and you'll be a lot more aware of your strengths and weaknesses Comment from : @wtzhang586 |

I am always fascinated by people who can play somethingbr brI've always been interested in piano Ever since I was a kid I got into Evanescence, and Amy Lee has become a huge role model and inspiration in the past few years I want to be like her more than anything I think I'm okay at singing, but I do have some issues that come up with thatbrbrbutbrbrIt honestly makes me feel so bad when seeing other people playing piano I've wanted to play it since I was a child, but I never actually got to start until 7th grade All self taught A teacher did teach me my first song and a little piano, but not a lot brbrI'm 21, and I just recently, around age 20, started taking lessons off and on It's a semester thing, and sometimes I can't get in a slot, and I miss the semester I was taking some from an old church friend, but she seemed to get super impatient with me, and so I haven't seen her in a while brbrI still suck at it after all these years Likejust how? I am literally going to d*e without ever doing what I want to do Comment from : @morgancm1830 |
My greatest pitfalls are fingering and tempo for sure! I'm not sure how to learn proper fingering techniques Comment from : @hillarylaurence |
I’m studying veterinary medicine and don’t have a lot of time or money to devote to a teacher so I’ve been self teaching myself I really relate to all of these points I can play quite a lot of songs, some considerably challenging songs but it takes me ages to learn pieces and when I’ve tried to go back and learn music theory properly, it feels so unmotivating You’ve made some amazing points about how I can be more efficient and still achieve my hobby goals Thank you! Comment from : @racheldeakin1125 |

It is my first week, and I am so glad to get tips like this The last 3 are the ones I am glad to start working on now Thanks Comment from : @GenIsysGames |

Thank you for the great advise Comment from : @angelh1743 |

thanks for this Is everyone's 4th finger weak I just can't seem to get it to go as high as the other fingers It's as if it restricted or something Are there exercises I can do to increase it's dexterity Comment from : @BlackbirdGirl72 |

SO HELPFUL THANK YOU Comment from : @juano0015 |

After about 50 hours of solo practice I got me a piano teacher and in only 3 weeks I'm already progressing much faster The teacher gives you a frame in which to go about so you learn more fluidly instead of fixating on some exercises or maybe a song taken from YouTube Comment from : @Libertoso |
I have always enjoyed your videos, your method of instructing and your enthusiasm which spurs the student to follow you Thank you (I need instruction in reading music particularly the lower and upper sections of the piano) Comment from : @ROSE-if7ic |

My problem is I’m a bit slow on the note reading and that I have no confidence in myself 🥲 Comment from : @monogh0st26 |

I somewhat get by as a self taught pianist by watching a mix of synthesia pieces that also have the live perfomance at the bottom instead of the virtual piano so I can copy the fingering technique, but it would definetely help learning sheet music someday someday XD Comment from : @alecraigan9662 |
