How does the standard deduction work? If I make $49,000 a year, I 'll be taxed at 22, but if my standard deduction is say $10,000, will I be taxed as if I only made $39,000 that year? Because I was taxed at 22 even though I barely made the $49,000 that year

Congress should lower their Salary (cap it at $150K), lose the right to voting on their own pay raises at all, and they should only get 50 or less of their Salary after leaving office It’s disgraceful that Military Service members give 20 years of their lives for only 50 of their salary, but Congress members only put in a few days per year and they get 100 Salary after a short 2 year Term That’s Robbing the Taxpayers

That's why you have you to check and see if that career advancement such as going back to school or slaving yourself hard for that promotion really does benefit you because you get taxed higher on that higher salary and basically making almost the same as you did before because taxes will always get the better of your pay for what you put in

I’m 66 retired at 57 and took SS at 62 The wife pretty much did the same We have been aggressively doing Roth conversions since the Trump tax laws first came into effect Our taxable accounts are down to about $350k This year we did a $60k conversion and stayed in the 22 tax bracket We expect to completely avoid RMDs
