I had to quit teaching college last year around this time Students refused to come to class, if they did - it was hours late No one would take notes, they would watch movies on their phone during class time all day long, they were rude and wildly out of control They would literally be rolling around on the floor Their degree of being offended would correlate with how difficult or how much work was involved to learn something new, and gave zero effort They felt all lessons in the curriculum were inappropriate and complained about it endlessly - even though they knew what they signed up for I can say the last 4-5 years teaching was the worst of my career They would fail their exams and administration would side with the students on everything and even change their mark to what the student felt that they deserved I left because of the PTSD I was going through, and the owners of the school were punishing me because for graduations I would not agree that many of the students should receive academic awards that their related to the course I taught - as the students (I know for fact), were completely un-hirable in the field that I was teaching them for Essentially, they bought their diplomas Comment from : @jenniferk2312 |

The end part of your discussion makes me think of the film The Children's Hour (1961) with Audrey Hepburn The premise is that a child spreads disastrous rumors about teachers, which has disastrous effect on their reputations and lives Comment from : @littlespotofsunshine |

I didn't consider my schools to be good schools except for one I went to and the college, and even the poorer schools had us read Much Ado About Nothing in middle school and Romeo and Juliet in high school That was back in the 2010s Comment from : @melainakiss |

How can a student learn to read when they are allowed to have cell phones in class? Phone addiction is real and a REAL PROBLEM Take out the phones and chrome books Bring in real books and spend time reading, writing and using critical thinking I share my classroom stories in WE LIED TO FIRE TEACHER Comment from : @JamesCurtisGeist |

Ssd that schools and institutions think the best ideas are to coddle them, dumb down the courses and otherwise contribute to the demise of education brbrThese younger generations chose poorly and their outcomes should reflect that brPoor decisions, laziness and entitlement shouldn't be a burden older generations should have to bear brbrThe younger generations literally cheat their way through life using chat gpt and Ai Comment from : @TheExcep_tion |

I take the bus, not a school bus The kids are loud, rude, hate any adults They take the bus because they cannot drive They are completely unhireable They will be in college for the rest of their lives They can't do anything and they are proud of it Constant socialization Playing with their toy all the time Hate adults I ride the bus because I am disabled These kids are disabled in a different way Arrogant ignorance! They are very proud of annoying adults They win every time! Comment from : @scottdavidmorgan255 |

The MINUTE STUDENTS THREATEN staff they should be removed from that class The very minute; no discussion, no fact finding, no mitigating factors, just IMMEDIATE separation of parties indefinitely Protect the staff; these students are more often than not THE CHAOS CREATORS Comment from : @carriew8566 |

Not my 2 kids! They started reading at 3, and now they’re graduating in 5 months with 40 GPA’s and 30 college credit hours I set the bar high for them, and refused to put them into public indoctrination centers (aka public schools) We homeschooled the early years, and Covid year, and the rest was a small Christian school and Catholic high school Comment from : @noneyun9943 |

Who is the "customer?' Why not define the customer as the standards of the subject/discipline, with the students as customer service reps who have to meet the customer's needs? Comment from : @johnmcgrath6192 |

I've listen to only 20 minutes of this video(I couldn't take it anymore) But I have to be honest: Your guest sounds SO nauseatingly boring And I tried to hang in there Perhaps there's more to his problems teaching than the attitudes of his students And he makes you sound like a YouTuber who is fishing for excuses to complain about your profession Anyone in any profession can accomplish that task Try to attract well spoken representatives of your profession to make your points Maybe you can share the screen with their students too; just to be fair Comment from : @Rick-c5s |

A college professor shouldn’t have to deal with behavior issues When you get to college you are an adult No one should have to tell you how to behave Comment from : @merlinsusan1 |
|
|
We don’t like this question? Wow! If we had said that to any of my college professors, they would’ve said, “I don’t care if you don’t like it Do the assignment or get a zero” The end Comment from : @merlinsusan1 |

I encourage my good students to expose the corruption because when colleges hand out degrees to everybody regardless of their academic aptitude the good students are the ones who are hurt as their degrees become worthless The reputation of such colleges will be exposed to the world and they go out of business Comment from : @Hani-y9c |

As a teacher of 26 years, I am sick of people blaming Covid for students not being able to read or write The wheels were falling off ten years ago It’s due to excuses for everything, and no accountability! Comment from : @BeverlyGlass |

Very informative video Thank you so much Comment from : @GodivaRedway |

In some part colleges did this to themselves They pushed everyone to get a degree, so now degrees are very expensive and at the same time, worthless Colleges made a lot of money in the process Comment from : @tessaoshea5697 |

In engineering school in the early 90s you were expected to do all your work on green engineering tablets and we were required to use certain calculatorsbrIf our handwriting was bad we would be required to type everything on a computerthis was when PCs were NOT easy to usebrWe had labs that would require a 30-40 page report every other weekbrIt's sad these kids can't even read and write Comment from : @bmphil3400 |

We started telling students "you need to know your learning style" and we told students they need to only learn that way Well nobody really likes to read so of course all of them say "well I learn hands on or I learn audio visual" BS, students should not be in charge of how they learn That's the teachers job Comment from : @jc1277 |

It is very severe in America, especially If you go to North East Asia (Korea especially), Western and Northern European countries, it is completely different Young adults, students, and even kids study very hard while learning practical skills that can be used in day-to-day jobs brbrNow with the Trump Administration, Education is devastated even more in America I believe History does not repeats but the patterns repeat America is going same pattern as the Roman empire but faster and more severely destructive way Comment from : @rmduwk |

Teachers: my kids can’t readbrAlso teachers: I will indoctrinate them with “social” material in English class and only teach linear thinking, the opposite of critical thinking so they get cognitive dissonance whenever they try for the rest of their lives Comment from : @ScottAT |

There's still hope! Hopefully soon, education will be again the responsibility of each state, and with 'school choice' policies, schools will have to compete Incompetent administrators, teachers, and students will have to wake up to reality The best will succeed and have a bright future Can't wait Comment from : @hikari8858 |

If this is English comp 101, the class size would be HUGE! Professor shows up, lectures in front, answers a few questions, gives assignments and leaves afterwards Students show up if they want, no attendance, etc If there is a recitation class, a grad student usually has to interact with the students more than the professor I wonder why this professor interacted more with the students Comment from : @musicofrazz761 |
|
|
Instead of helping me, despite my parentage, teachers passed me on while I stood in tears begging to be taught I'll never forget that betrayal Instead of going back to tried and true curriculum you have been dumbing things down probably since the department of education got their claws in us Every generation you pass there are more and more kids who did not receive a good education and you are surprised that it has come back to haunt teachers brYes, the parents suck but when you slowly erode a people like that there are consequences Those kids grow up and become parents who have hardly had an education Comment from : @chiuab |

Boy, this guy nailed it on the worst aspects of college teaching Some ways to get rid of the psychopaths and sluggards at the beginning: set up an initial killer syllabus requiring reading, short writings, and gradings for the first few weeks The ones not going to engage will leave and you'll be left with those who do want to learn Or the sluggards will essentially be failing right at the beginning and can't whinge you at the end about "makeups" and "incompletes" (did I mention maxing out the school's "unexcused absences" and giving none beyond that limit for ANY reason?) Comment from : @donnarichardson7214 |

Comment from : @mistiroberts1576 |

It’s astounding how intelligence and wanting to obtain knowledge is looked down upon these days, largely by younger generations smh like being “dumb” is somehow supposed to be cool or actually transform them into productive human beings that can contribute positively to humanity It’s absolutely absurd! Wow Thank you so much for the insight Preparing my own children for their higher education experience One of the things I keep encouraging them in is that in college they will be surrounded by students who care to be there and will have a greater interest to learn with less distracting behavior My children are hard workers who take their schooling seriously It is precious a d i hope they will retain that But as our son enters his Jr High school year, as hard as he does work, I do sometimes wonder how high the bar might not be Comment from : @RespectfullyYours-fw3ou |

It's hard to be a good writer if you don't read Too many students don't read In the last six years, in my gen eds, I flunk 30 of my students, not because they are stupid, but because they don't even read the material and as a consequence can't answer questions in exams They don't flunk just essay or short answer questions but almost multiple choice When I ask them "did you read the material", again 1/3 look at me as if I am stupid and say no Many students tell me having to study three hours a week for 12 credit hours is too much work Comment from : @eveblack7685 |

First off, I wouldn’t share my diary with ANYONE! Especially not a creepy professor 😅brbrSecondly, college students are PAYING for their own education!brbrShouldn’t they have a say in what they learn? Comment from : @TScott-vp9zv |

Their attitudes have filtered into their work habits at their jobs as well You go to a McDonald’s or some other business in which service is required and ask for a simple task like having a table wiped clean, and they look at you like you spoken an alien language Comment from : @DeCurtaRican |

He’s right I am a nontraditional, ie, older student in a grad school stem program at a very prestigious university The number of students I have to group with quarter after quarter who don’t know basic English skills, and cannot follow standard APA or Chicago style guidelines is shocking They are horrible riders, and you can see it in their discussion board posts, their essays, their disorganized style of putting together term papers, etcbrbrThey suck!brbrFurthermore, they don’t know how to approach group interactions, either They don’t understand the importance of putting together a team charters at the start of a project, or establishing clear roles and responsibilities for the term of the projectbrbrI’ll go as far as to say that most of the students that I have had to group with did not belong in this program Literally all they know how to do is write code brbrI find myself constantly wondering how some of them got admitted, and the crazy thing is they tend to expect less of me because of racial stereotypes When they find out how on point I am and how well I write, they are amazed Comment from : @DeCurtaRican |

I live in NYC/Brooklyn and sent my child to a private dual language program and the English half barely read a book the entire elementary and middle school years Teachers were all from Columbia Teacher’s College and trained that demanding students read literature or novels as a class is “old fashion” and when parents asked time and time again why our kids aren’t reading books, the teachers would just say “we don’t do that anymore” I was so disgusted They would give the students sheets with sections to read and answer questions They also barely write any essays It was an utter disaster The foreign language acquisition was really the only good part And he made amazing friends Even elite private schools have fallen to progressivism I’m glad this new administration is sending education back to states I want to add that my son always enjoyed reading books and since we introduced a smart phone, we now have to demand he read 45 minutes each day over the weekend (his school work is intense during the week) He’s in 9th grade and is finishing the third book of Alexandre The Great by Valerie Massimo Manfredi Serious books Comment from : @jp5419 |

I struggled to write neat and quick due to dyspraxia but wasn't diagnosed untol i was 10, though i could read quite well But i would never have dreamed about disrespecting a teacher Comment from : @thecreativemillenial |

Im 67 Did the college thing Most of it was a waste They wanted the well rounded student so you were taking nonsense classes just for credits aka money I would say 75 was geared just for money Ive always heard that colleges in other countries don't demand the well rounded crap of classes for money Comment from : @wanderingsoul7719 |

All due respect, I find it very ironic how this professor calls out “word salad” because it was hard to follow his tangents I get it, it’s an interview, I’m sure he is a great writer, but I found his interview very difficult to listen to There were definitely nuggets of good information, but there were definitely moments of word salad type thoughts and talking points Comment from : @luxpeganine2489 |
|
|
In this video podcast, it seems that the professor is a poor communicator as well as his students? There wasn't complete ideas and sentences coming out of his mouth? A lot of hand gestures and beard rubbing to imply ideas and concepts to the interviewer? Articulating specifics with full sentences is the key for refined communication skills in a setting like this The question that should be asked is, "who is calling the kettle black here?" communication starts with the teacher or professor, correct? Comment from : @sharonneth9106 |

How the hell can you teach while these kids are in "roll-y chairs"!?! LOL Might as well teach a class in bumper cars Comment from : @TuggyWaffles |

I call the Gen X and millennials the Public School era students While Gen Z and Gen Alpha are the Charter School era of students So these are completely two different school systems our students over the years came up under So those two schools eras explain a lot on what’s happening with our students in this American education system And what these students become once they leave the school system Comment from : @madant22 |
|
|
I thought millennials could barley read and write and Gen Z was getting more better education than them But it’s comes to find out the younger Gen Z kids are the ones that can’t read or write as good The older Gen Z ones had the smarter ones with the most the black women with the highest literacy and graduation rates and overall enrollment in colleges The younger Gen Z and Gen Alpha kids weren’t following suit with this Comment from : @madant22 |

Not all of Gen Z, just the younger ones Comment from : @pie-g8l5d |

Why do these children or kids get into the colleges when they can’t read right they should go to a special school to learn that before they go to college in the early seven days only the children that went to college was AB and C students The rest of the students couldn’t go to college cause their grades were up Why are you letting these children come in there with their grades down? When I was a kid the highlight of my week was when my father would drive me to the public library Books are and were exciting they are tickets that open up new worlds Books enlighten and a grease the wheels of my brain My mother would sit us on her lap as little kids and read to us Back in my day we only had a set of encyclopedias and books to get our information from So bad that kids only seem to be able to read a sentence or two from Wikipedia Comment from : @Ladyatthegateofdawn |
