$30 for a bag of feed, crazy We do things differently we sell our eggs and use the money to buy pig feed and rabbit feed The chickens basically pay for our meat Are chickens worth it, hell yes

This would be a waste of my time for 50 hens for the risk That little bit over a 1,000 dollars a year doesn't even cover your depreciation for your coop, fencing, equipment, insurance, truck Even paying yourself for the 3hrs a week is not worth it Since you have a farm and I'm sure you own a Zero Turn; you would make more money mowing 4 to 5 homes/small properties for 28 wks a year That would allow you to just have enough hens to feed yourself If you have any disease issues, loss of hens, or need to replace fencing/equipment you lose money It is a expensive hobby - don't call it a business

My family had 20,000 chickens back around 1970 , eggs sold for 7 to 14 cents a dozen , it took 8 tons of feed per week plus water, ground up oyster shells < to help chicks have good egg shells along with 7 days a week getting up early feed the chicks and to gather eggs At the peak of them laying we would gather about 16 to 18 thousand eggs per day , The smell was not nice say the least Farming is hard and long work which most people don't know of or appreciate

You are not accounting for packaging and labeling into your cost structure We are paying about 54 cents per dozen for packaging brbrFeed costs Wow, 60 cents per lb is pricey I am using a local feed mill for a custom spec layer feed and my loaded cost is 30 cents per lbbrbrYour final analysis is spot on, eggs are an anchor product that brings customers to your farm This is, in my experience, the most “farm fresh” product you can offer People buy eggs from us and it is easy to cross sell them honey, produce, and specialty products

Great video My opinion You are paying a lot for feed, but maybe your area is more expensive I'm in Ontario Canada and I source my feed from a certified organic farm for $2700 ($1900 USD) per 50 lb bag I have about 100 hens I can get certified non-GMO about $400 cheaper We charge $600 dozen Regarding paying myself This is a hobby for me I know I don't make much but I don't care :) Good luck with all your farming

8 bucks! Wowza I sell a dozen for $4 and I am on the higher end around here However my feed is non GmO 22 layer pellets made at a plant about 30 miles from here A 50 pound bag for my feed is $15 Amazing the wide price/cost ranges for different areas

I never made any money selling eating eggs Especially when you want $5 a dozen and the grocery stores sell them for $3 brI did make money selling babies and still do Im not in it for the money I like the chickens and find them therapeutic and relaxing Day old babies are found at every feed store Started pullets can be sold for $15 at 6 weeks and I have 6 to 7 lbs of feed into one at that point $25 for a 50 lb bag of starter at this age I have just under $4 in a bird Most birds are sold by the 6 week time mark Some do go longer and sell for more A ready or layer is $25 and an easy sell at this point I’ve even bought end of season close out birds that haven’t sold at the local Tractor supply and others and feed them a bit to finance the chicken hobby

First love the channel and just subscribed, but you need to find a local mill or farm to buy your feed You shouldn't be paying that much for feed I'm getting Organic Non-GMO, Non-corn and Non-soy for about 35¢ a pound Sometimes 30¢ a pound Yes! I'm buying 6500lbs per a season, but your paying way to much Find a local mill or one driving distances They can mix the same type of feed for cheaper You might have to buy your feed for the year in one purchase, but you cut your feed cost in half Good luck and awesome channel
