I cleaned 4 Franklin 1/2 dollars today Baking soda and warm water They were so tarnished from the acids in the paper of the collection book they’d been in for decades that you couldn’t even really see the reverse And the tarnish was also all over the edge and around the rim of the obverse They looked terrible Now they look great Comment from : @KingOfPentacle5 |

This is the only way to get a refund from ebay, have your head screwed on, and convince them with evidence Most sellers in this case would expect ebay to believe them or would not have the gumption to do a bit of digging and find out what happened I probably would have reported this to law enforcement or the Feds as this is a very serious offence Comment from : @serialcoins |
I reckon I found a solution Zero liquid involved Put coin in cornflour & leave it alone for as long as it needs to lift/absorb the oils with the dirt revealing a beautiful coin I had put some change into a box containing cornflour from candies just to keep them from being lost & am well pleased with coins looking like new with no water or liquids just cornflour Comment from : @WillShepherd-b4f |
I removed the tarnish from a Morgan Silver Dollar using just warm water, baking soda, and aluminum foil The coin seems no worse for wear and I don’t see how this treatment would harm the coin in any way Comment from : @jerrysurowiec |

I do like that the owner said if they come out of the ground, they are generally impacted beyond the point of cleaning impact to collect-ability If you do your research, you can clean a coin, it's not rocket science here, it's patience and methodical processing of coins I pull hundreds of coins out of the ground every year, some of them are so crustied up you can't read a date I tumble them in walnut media and check on them every 24 hours, pulling out coins as they shed the crud to avoid tumbling them more than is required Once cleaned to that point, it's usually just tarnish on the coins, and I assess each coin as to if I'll clean it or notbrbrIf you found a coin in a drawer that is valuable but tarnished, and otherwise in good shape, don't clean that one If you dig it out of 8 inches of soil, go ahead and clean it unless is somehow comes out clean, which is rare but does happen Comment from : @Kirk-oj6qm |

White distilled vinegar (frozen to a slush NOT HARD, draining off liquid to have just the slush) and a dab of hydrogen peroxide to clean nickels Takes about 12 hours each side but it simply removes corrosion without rubbing on the coin Comment from : @mrspankytank2858 |

I use knife stropping compound on a rag to clean my coins I only o this to coins that are beyond recognition due to the dirt or patina build up thoughif the coin is just a little dirty I whip it with a micro fiber cloth to remove whatever loose dirt or patina I can I can't remember the name knife stropping compound I use but it's one that's a fine grit meant to polish a blade edge rather than remove any burs from sharpening and as a result it puts a nice shine on the coin as well and almost no scratcheshowever the coins I get are circulated and have some minor scratches any way so I'm not concerned about the scratches! Yes, even the proof coins I have were circulated as I work for a Cash-in-Transit security company operating the coin wrapping machines and we get all manner of things come threw Comment from : @TheMegaAsh |

Total Garbage! I just cleaned a 1964 US Quarter that has silver in it, and I cleaned it completely with White Petroleum Jelly I put it on the quarter, and I left it at room temperature for 2 days, I did this a few times with a soft cloth, and it came out beautifully! I am currently perfecting this skill with other coins as I am not a professional I also use magnesium pill powder, and I got an even awesome outcome Comment from : @greatgooglymooglyoriginal |

These "standards" are set by a few people who like their collection in a certain manner, especially museums If not cleaning a coin to its former glory is so destructive, leave the paintings in the open Why protect them? Coins and Notes were designed to look and feel a certain way, no one would touch a coin that looks to have spent it's time in a gutter I say clean those coins and make them shine so the art on it gets displayed Comment from : @SandeepBPatel |

So you rather drive a restored 1967 muscle car or a beat up rusty POS 1967 muscle car? This whole concept of not cleaning a rare coin is nothing but an illusion of uniqueness that makes no sens If you own a rare coin, it is unique regardless of its condition I rather have a coin that i can admire than a coin that i can’t even tell what it is Comment from : @KaliBlaz |
Well darn I found a 1917 penny in my change and it was really nasty So I remembered hearing you can clean old pennies with vinegar So I put a couple of drops on it, rubbed it with my fingers and it almost looks new now Are you telling me that if it was valuable before cleaning, now it's worthless? Comment from : @COWBOYBARNMAN |
What about using an ultrasonic cleaner? Comment from : @jeweleratlarge |

I bought a 1926 penny at a garage sale that was sent to PCGS It was very dirty and stained and had no grading Just said genuine wheat penny I used soap and water, and a soft rubber eraser The stains came off, and most of the detail was still on the penny, including the full wheat design Comment from : @robertromeo762 |

So using classic cars is a bad analogy cause they are worth more 99 of the time if you strip the patina off and get a fresh paint job on it Comment from : @TheShmeebitdog |
