When i started playing piano, i was afraid because i thought that i had to sight read anything perfectly upon first glance Like looking at a piece like La campanella and instantly being able to play it in the right tempo It was such a relief when i figured out that almost everyone takes a little bit of time and that even the professionals sometimes read the wrong note Comment from : @NilsWennström |

ESSENTIAL: DO HARMONIC ANALYSIS BEFORE AND DURING PLAYbrBe conscious of what the chord are (if not too tricky)brhow they change, by (cascaded) deresolution/resolutionbrmodulation ! (a large part of the charm of Schubert, Fauré) BEFORE AND DURING PLAYbrbrbrAnticipate mentally (hear in you head) the pitch of the next notes, as such but also what the notes will sound like, by criteria of interval, harmonic role in context br oh a 7th that means Ix, so we'll likely go to IVbr oh, we are now on the IVbr haha, the bass note of an augmented sixth)brbrbrIf you have heard the piece before, betterbrLook well ahead before playingbrLook ahead while playing Comment from : @PijanitsaVode |

This helped confirm I was on the right track with quite a few techniques I was slowly figuring out myself in my 3-4 years of piano lessons/classes I was always worried they were somehow going to prove to be bad habits so I tried to avoid them and force myself to read each note, which was slow and error prone Wish my teachers had explained them as you did here Comment from : @ericj9011 |

I play bass clarinet, and never was a very good reader On my instrument the score is farther away and the neck is in the way Scores are conventionally written on the stave using the treble clef, so my bottom C is written below the 4th ledger line down from the stave; the C at the top of the 2nd (clarion) register is on the second ledger line above the stave; and my "comfort zone" in the altissimo extends to the second E - above the seventh ledger line above the stave I can get to a G# above thatbrOften the only way to get a readable score is to transcribe (Noteflight or Musescore) using "8va" and "8vb" and possibly colour code passages accordingly Comment from : @joeg46Highlands |
This is really helpful I have an astigmatism that blurs the lines and makes everything look messy and overlapping It makes music hard to read and slows me down a lot But I think I may be able to tell whether the notes are on a space or a line better than telling exactly which line they're on I will definitely try this! Comment from : @brianhowe201 |
Nice tips but I'm 32 and nothing sticks I can play chords if you tell me a chords name but I can't read staves It's all a blur Like it all gets jumbled up and takes half a sec to read and process it Comment from : @gregoryfenn1462 |
