Going decimal was NOT for the people It was to make things easier for the Common market/EU types Easier to globalize and enslave people Comment from : @Sennmut |
The old system was great: 2 farthings to a ha'penny; 2 ha'pence to a penny; 3 pence to a thrupenny bit; 2 thupenny bits to a tanner; 2 tanners to a shilling or bob; 2 bob and a tanner to a half crown; four half crowns to a ten bob note; two ten bob notes to a quid brbrCompared to this really simple system, the new fangled decimal coinage is way too complicated for me ;-) Comment from : @mandolinic |

Meanwhile, in the USA, we're still stuck with the absurdity of 16 ounces to a pound, 4 pints to a gallon, 5,280 feet to a mile, etc But we do use 100 cents to a dollar! Comment from : @hebneh |
For the record, the 20p coin didn't come out until 1982 Of course, there is no longer a ½p coin for obvious reasons Comment from : @Tubewings |
We still used the shilling as 5p and the florin as 10p for about 20 years after decimalisation, as a child whenever somebody passed me a shilling or florin I never thought of them as any other than a 5p or 10p, can you imagine the bank of england allowing that these days? Comment from : @stedav100 |
Only remembered the sixpence, as they kept that on until 1974 However, surely 100 to the pound is easier to work out than 240? Remember learning about money at school in the 1970s when they were being tight and not purchasing new books The teachers kept saying "forget about pages 10-14" This featured 3d, 6d etc So we asked the older kids and they said "it used to be called dense but now it's called pence!" Quiz question:
Many of the countries in the British Empire used Pounds, shillings and pence until the 1960s/70's
Which country was the last country to abandon the £sd currency system?
Comment from : @LeamingtonSteve |

In the 1980's and early 1990's I remember when we used one shilling coins as 5p's and two shilling coins as 10p's Comment from : @FieldmasterFox |

I thought a loaf of bread for one and six (1/6), seemed expensive at the time and 30 bob for a weeks shopping was going some Does anybody remember the decimalisation advert with the song? Comment from : @alanstarkie2001 |
I was 11 when we went decimal and I *still* automatically convert back to real money with every purchase! Comment from : @xummij |
old money was fab, counting in twelves! great! My Dad always talked about "ten bob" or twenty bob" , cool Comment from : @BNCA70 |
Sorry! The intention was some light humour - certainly not to offend In science,'ten' is a very awkward number The old joke was that using a base of ten mean't we could use the 'digits' on our hands
£sd was no problem at all As a 14yr old in 1971, I adapted easily but many older people struggled with it To this day, I know quite a few older people who still refer to 50 pence as 'ten bob' (and £150 as 'thirty bob') and why shouldn't they? Comment from : @Ampex196 |
Our English ancestors weren't 'simple' They knew how to count (without using their fingers)! Comment from : @Ampex196 |
Much easier in the old days There was 240 pennies to the Pound, 12 pennies to the Shilling, hence 20 Shillings to the pound Just as the Americans have nickels & dimes; we had tanners & bobs
There was 21 Shillings to a Guinea and four pence to a groat (Don't ask)!
I'd be perfectly happy to go back to £sd Comment from : @Ampex196 |
Wow, the decimal currency board have their own jingle! Comment from : @phyd |
