Before decimalisation, the coinage was for more interesting I can remember receiving pennies from the reign of George IV and from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, Gibraltar etc Copper coins from all over the former Empire were readily accepted - larger denominations might sometimes produce a frown from the shop keeper! Occasionally there would be halfpennies from the reigns of George IV or George III While these were originally larger that the modern issues, they had, usually, worn down so much that they would pass as modern halfpennies, just as long as Britannia was still discernible Comment from : @Mark3ABE |

Wasn't the Royal Ordnance Factory at Radway Green, Cheshire, subcontracted to make a lot of the copper coins in the run up to decimalisation? Comment from : @christianluts810 |

One of my favorite videos, great stuff this piece of history I worked at the international department of a bank in the Netherlands from 1969 to 2002 So I learned to deal with the Pound/Shilling/Pence era, which was also taught at school And I remember very vividly the decimalisation In 1970 I went to London for the first time on a short holiday I remember having a 50P coin which put into a 1P arcade machine by error The guy who ran the place was not very cooperative in getting it back to me, but in the end he did Fifty P was a lot of coin for an 18 yoin them days, I also experienced the changeover from our guilder to the horrible Euro in 2002 Comment from : @gerritleemburg6777 |

Rhodesia was the first country to use the Machin portrait, although we kept to £sd until decimal day in 1970 After that we had the Rhodesian Dollar and lost the queen's portrait brWe could still use the 3d (21/2 cent) and 6d (5 cent), brAs 10, 20 and 25 cent coins didn't exist until mid 70s we could use1/-, 2/- and 2/6 instead Comment from : @grahamturner5963 |

Give me the old pre-Dec coins any day All the decimal coins have always reminded me of tokens If you find the more recent coins that have been in the soil or even exposed for a very short period of time they are bursting from the inside from rust and the plating is all falling away In the good old days, we had at least 5 monarchs circulating in our change (I think Paul might remember) and I always saved my school pocket money because the dinner ladies would always save me the Victorian coppers and I've still got some of them Well done again Paul Comment from : @staceygrove7295 |

I’ve changed a bit since 1971 to 🥴 I never saw a crown in circ either Great video on the evolution of our currency Apparently there are some 2016 £1 coins have 2017 around the rim Some vending machines recognise coins according to how magnetic they are? Or did I just make that up 🤷♀️😎🍀💜 Comment from : @TenBob |
|
The 2011 5p and 10p, weren't issued into circulation until 2012, instead of January 2011, because vending machine companies needed more time for their machines to be updated As far as I'm aware the 2011's were nickel plated steel Haven't come across a cupro-nickel one Great video Coin Patrol, but was hoping you would have included the 1994 D-Day 50p, as that was put into circulation instead of the standard Britannia definitive, which only was available in sets Love the A-Z alternatives at the end! 😂 Comment from : @mackemmoolah |

Born in 72, I’ve only ever had the misfortune to have handled decimal currency Paul Once I gained an interest into coins around 20 years ago, I had never even considered pre decimal coinage until I found your channel quite a few years back now I will buy an old penny one day & showcase on my channel, get one step ahead of NEC Comment from : @ianritchie9017 |

Very well put together, another great video Thanks i was born in the mid sixties and just remember spending the pre decimal coins, but what i do remember was the expectation of maybe getting a very old coin ie an old shilling, sixpence or two bob in your change that was still legal tender These days other than commeratives and mules , theres no old coins to to look for Just as a side question, what is the oldest legal tender coin you could get in your change today Comment from : @darrenplassard7779 |
