I had a dream one time and they were taking up offerings No one was putting in money They were putting in a piece of paper on which they had written some sin or hindrance that they were giving up so they could be closer to Jesus It has forever changed my thoughts on what the Father wants of his children Tithing was for the jews also and never required of the gentiles The old system of even that was done away with when Jesus died on that cross and rose again the third day

Was this her first time giving? Was this her frequent giving? Did she believe what Jesus taught on 'seek first the kingdom of God and these things shall be add to you? Did she believe out of her poverty she can be generous? Did she believe her righteous deed will never let her go hungry? Did she believe the God of Israel provide manna and quail daily to his people? So Jesus just use the woman as a teaching point and let her go on with the abuse of her poverty?

The reason why Jesus was watching The Temple Treasury (Mark 12:41-44) between his condemnation of Jewish religious leaders (Mark 12:38-40) and his prediction of the Temple’s demolition (Mark 13) When you read the story in this context, you find verbal connections between the widow’s offering to the Temple and Jesus’ predictions of judgment Jesus is not talking about generosity or self-sacrificial love before or after the story of the widow He is talking about how corrupt the religious leaders are who control the Temple and how the Temple is going to be completely destroyed in a future act of divine judgment If you read carefully, you recognize that Jesus talks about widow’s in the preceding context and the Temple in his subsequent remarks to the disciples That context is how we should understand the story about the widow’s offering her last few cents to the Temple Treasury Jesus is angry at the Jewish teachers who are persuading widow’s to give all their money to the Temple Treasury He sees a corrupt religious system that no longer honors God’s heart to care for the needy Teachers of the Law no longer honor the intent of the Law Instead, the system has created a wealthy religious personage who construct lavish buildings and pray in long robes to glorify their public reputation, while the poor go insolvent That’s why he isn’t impressed by the “wonderful synagogues, seats and banquets” in the Temple Jesus is intentionally highlighting the widow’s offering to the Temple Treasury as an illustration of how disorderliness, Jerusalem is He is condemning Jerusalem’s leaders just like Amos and Isaiah and Ezekiel did before him The widow’s offering is evidence of what Ezekiel saw in the Temple over 600 years earlier: “The people of the land have practiced oppression and committed robbery, and they have wronged the poor and needy and have oppressed the sojourner without justice” (Ezekiel 22:29)

I knew a lady at a church I used to attend who was compelled to put her food stamps in the offering plate (this was before food stamps went digital) I assume the church gave them back, but it was rather disturbing that she felt compelled to sacrifice her food just because the church was pressuring everyone to tithe

I wish that I heard this when I was widowed 14 years ago Our pastor at that time was a money hungry bully, and he coerced me into giving around 50 Thousand dollars of the money my husband left me I thought my finances would be cursed if I didn't It seemed every other sermon was about MONEY! The next pastor was the same-- tithe, tithe, tithe! He asked to be wealthy so he "would have more to give"! Turned out he was helping himself to every penny of the money given to "the church" , spending it on himself and neglecting to pay the mortgage payments on the church building Very disillusioning! Now I know to trust in no man, pastor or not I trust in Jesus for my salvation, and have learned to read the word for myself

Actually, "devouring widow's houses" was more literal than persuading little old ladies to donate too much It relates to the chauvinist laws of the day, in which women were not allowed to own property As a result, a widow would be turned out of her home when her husband died, and a relative of her former husband would take the property The scribes and pharisees administered this rule, and so were guilty of "devouring widow's houses"

Mark 12:38-40 is talking about taking advantage of RICH widows They steal their wealth by giving them a "show" in return You are putting the wrong connection between these verses I agree that the story of the widow's mite is not about how great the poor widow is; instead, it is about condemning those rich people who give from their abundance as a kind of show The behavior of the Pharisee in vs 38-40 and of the rich people in 41-44 is the same: both are going around putting on a show to look super spiritual, when in reality, they are extremely far from God

Just some caution: Don't let this cause you to miss how the Lord is using Pastor Robert to teach the Word of God and the Character of God While I agree we should give to the poor, and that churches need to reevaluate their system of receiving tithes and how they USE the money, the revelation of giving to the church is something that is inspired by scripture (the irony) and the work of God's salvation in people There many people who want to give both to the poor and to the church due to the work of the Holy Spirit in them (untaught to do so by man) and the revelation of scripture by the Holy Spirit Remember, we NEED the Holy Spirit for gifts, teachings, and scripture You must submit 100 to God and stop idolizing your own intellect or knowledge (though knowledge is necessary) and God will open your eyes to more and more
