From 2017 - 2019, I barely made $50k In 2020, my business really took off and hit my first $100k year I raised my rates after proving myself In 2023, I made $180kbrbrI work ONLY for 5 lawyers (two law firms) handling criminal defense, some process serving upon difficult subjects, and some very limited surveillance (usually less than 2 hours at a time) I no longer work for random callers I no longer have to market for business I only work for attorneys and only the attorneys of my choosing Trust me, the first two years in business, I worked with at least 10 lawyers until I found the right fit for mebrbrI am a solo operator, but I occasionally sub-out some work for a small piece of that fee I make more than most attorneys, but personal injury attorneys earn much more than I do If I scaled my business, I could make more, but my earnings are great, and I have investments that are helping my money grow Additionally, I have an office, I don't drive far away from my home, and I don't have to sit in my vehicle for 8 hours each day In fact, I work whenever I feel like it I take off when I feel like it I travel often to fantastic locations and have no headaches of employees or bosses I am also older (55 now), and this is a 2nd career for me brbrGetting attorneys as clients is tricky, but I found it pretty easy to land a few early-on Finding the right attorney for my style and my moxie was very challenging until 2020-2021 brbrJohn was 100 correct, the three-year mark was key However, if you suck at investigations and cannot write a good quality report, you will not make it as a solo operator You can function as a PI working for an agency if your investigation results are less than stellar, but not as a business/agency owner responsible for client outcomes In short, PIs can make good money, even becoming millionaires with smart money strategies, but you have to be good brbrJohn the PI Guy is certainly an exceptional PI and probably doing well on YouTube for a side hustle Most PIs that I see on YouTube and in social media forums don't have two nickels to rub together, so be careful with the advice you're getting in those venues brbrGood luck and go get 'em!
