Most Americans did not have 100 bucks ($2395 today) in the Depression year of 1933 The majority of the gold was surrendered by the Fed, large commercial banks and wealthy individuals The Fed was given a receipt for their gold which is still listed on their balance sheet On the US Treasury side, they value the gold on their books at 42 dollars and change, meanwhile the market price is 2600!
