As an example, we have the pseudo-sentence, "the golfer used a (putter, pətter) on the green" We also have (UMBRELLA, "əMBRELə") and (AMERICA, əMERICə) However, the "U" in "put", as in, "put the book on the shelf", has a very different sound I suppose that the letter "u" in "put" and the "oo" in "book" are /ʊ/? We have "PʊT THE BʊK ON THE SHELF"
