Thomas Müller? Jägermeister? How do you pronounce these letters with the two dots on top in German? Can you learn it if you didn't grow up with it? And what if you don't have these letters on your keyboard? I gave my best to make a video that will help you guys with all of these questions and will hopefully make the German Umlauts a little less scary Please add YOUR tips and tricks for pronouncing the Umlauts in the comments below! ⤵ Comment from : @FelifromGermany |

Neat-licht video @FelifromGermany!br(Sorry, I don't know how to spell neat-lick) brFormer English teacher here I'm writing sitcoms nowbr"Scones & Jam" is a current projectbrFeaturing twin brothers who meet a girl called JambrOne bro spells his surname Scöne, and the other, Scone (without an Umlaut)brCan you do a vid with these made up pronunciations? If so I'll give the brothers an Anglo-Germanic aristocracy backstory and when it's made/bought by the BBC, I'll be sure to mention your channel as inspiration (and try and wrangle you a cameo)brNB: There are two pronunciations of SCONE in English Scone (as in gone, the posh pron) and Scone (as in bone, the more regional and unfairly looked down upon pron)brChusse Comment from : @donalfogarty8745 |

I’m from Peru My teacher said: to make ü sound you make your mouth ready to say u but you pronounce i , and with ö you make your mouth ready to say o but say e and to make ä you make your mouth ready for a and instead sound e Comment from : @scarletbowness970 |

Umlauts are a little weird from the usability perspective Words don't randomly have umlauts i think Sometimes when you turn a word into its plural, or make it have a weird ending, or a particular case, the word changes and gains an umlaut and is pronounced like that Interesting Comment from : @LerxnGerman |

Imagine trying to practice umlauts at a public setting Everyone would sound like a different animal You've got a great style of teaching Comment from : @LerxnGerman |

Thanks for the video! As soon as you mentioned it may be just moving the togue more forward, I immediately got it! Also thought really fun to do is to repeat the sound "a ae a ae a ae" / "o oe o oe o oe" / "u ue u ue u ue", and feel the tongue go back and forth😄 Comment from : @CattyKit_chill |

tip: läuten is normally associated with bells, not phones :) for a phone would sound old-fashioned or maybe too regional (parts of Austria or southern Germany) Can we get a confirmation? Comment from : @blibliobli7275 |

The examples you gave of English words that have the ä sound in only work in American English! brbrIn most British English accents maths/math, apple etc just have an "a" sound Although in the very old fashioned version of the "received pronunciation" accent (kinda how Queen Elizabeth spoke, and BBC presenters in 1945) it was almost like an "ä", but nobody really speaks like that in the UK anymore! At the Monsters of Rock concert in Nuremberg in 1985 Motley Crue ( umlauts over the o and u) was the opening act I was amused by the crowd chanting the band name using the umlauts that were just there for decoration Comment from : @thatsfunnyjimmy1351 |

Hi Felicia, thank you for your wonderful video I am new to German and have been trying to learn Can you please clear my confusion regarding the pronunciation of ch sound in Mädchen As you pronounce the "ch" in Mädchen it resembles the sound of y in word yawn but I have noticed that in German words like ich the ch sound looks like sh sound, though I have Googled and found out that the sound of ch in "ich" does not resemble sound of sh in English; it's pretty confusing though And I have also read about ach sound of ch which is easy to hear and I can pronounce it easily However, I have confusion in ich sound of ch and another confusion of your way of pronouncing ch sound in the Mädchen word Comment from : @qadeerkandhro4764 |

Although it isn't spelled the same way, the same sound as the German "ü" exists in French also The best way I've heard to describe how to make it for English speakers is to make the "e" sound, as in "sheep" or "keel," but form your lips as though you're saying "ooo", as in "loop" or "cool" Comment from : @VeneficusPlantaGenista |

Hello my name is Guy Narcomey I speak Comanche language in Oklahoma I wanting to write content for the language that is internationally accesible I am having a problem with this sound, and i need some input from the international community on what would be more accomadating to them We have a sound UH, it sounds like U in munch, punch, brunch, lunch, Up, Upon, punt, it sounds like that U sound But I am not sure what letter(s) or symbol makes that sound in the international community the U with the two dots on top sound close to it, but not all the way, but i could be mistaken In the example the numnber 5 it says fünf, and that does sound like the UH sound i am talking about So does the Ü make the "UH" sound like punt, munch, brunch, lunch, up ? Would you recommend using the Ü or some other letter or symbol? Thank you Thank you!! Comment from : @gmcmullins3251 |

It's funny how the letter "ä" originally came to me through Swedish origins (I think), aber ich auch spreche Deutsch, so this letter is such an identity crisis to mebrbrSwedish "ä" is like the "a" in "cat" German "ä" is like the "a" in "care" I know languages are different, but sometimes one way just sounds wrong! … and I don't know which one 🥲 Comment from : @ifscho |

Outstanding video! The book by Yuriy Ivantsiv “ Polyglot Notes Practical Tips for Learning Foreign Language” had a profound impact on me, opening new horizons of understanding the diversity of languages and cultures The author's ideas that learning foreign languages not only broadens one's horizons but also contributes to spiritual development became a real revelation for me I realized that every language is not just a system of signs, but a whole world with its history, traditions and way of life Thanks to this book, I learned to see language learning as a path to self-discovery and a deeper understanding of others, which in turn enriched my worldview Inspired by Ivantsiv's approach, I became more conscious of my learning, integrating the author's practical advice into my daily life This opened up opportunities for me not only to improve my language skills, but also to develop a personal philosophy based on mutual understanding and empathy Immersing myself in languages has allowed me to see the world from different angles and realize the importance of cultural exchange, which has been the foundation for my spiritual growth Reading this book and applying its advice has helped me to become a more open and tolerant person who seeks harmony in my relationships with others Comment from : @matildawolfram4687 |

My personal opinion is, that omitting the umlaut dots is a BIG no-no Every native German reader will think, the text was written by a mentally challenged person Don't do it, especially if you want something from the reader Comment from : @ripley_hicks_newt_86 |
|
Feli should discuss the pronunciation of "ig" at the end of a word, vs the same two-letter combination at the end of a word It seems that there is a sharp difference in some dialects, but in others, there's no difference Comment from : @gregblair5139 |
