I'll be asking my bridesmaids to buy a specific dress, but for the shoes I told them it could be anything tan/beige since I know all three already have shoes that color I'll be gifting them all necklaces to wear during the wedding, and I'm not planning on having a traditional bachelorette party so that will also be one less expense to figure out We're planning on paying to rent the suit for his only groomsman since he's a bit younger and will probably need to purchase a nice pair of shoes to wear and we don't want him to spend a bunch of money when he's on a bit of a tight budget

Can I ask about the overall financial commitment that is typically requested of bridesmaids? I feel like it’s become so normalized to spend $1500 or more on a (mandatory) bachelorette trip so that the overall expenses climb above $3000 I’m feeling right now like being asked to become a bridesmaid is like in Monopoly when you get served with one of crappy cards that makes you pay I’m having such anxiety over having this huge conflict over being asked to commit tons of time as well, that the wedding will become a part time job, and that I will have to compromise on my goals because of someone’s wedding

I think the bride should be paying for bridesmaid expenses - dress, hair, makeup, shoes, jewlery (that's just what I have grown up with, I don't get how a bride could ask the bridesmaid to pay for these things when they are telling them what colour and styles they need to wear) Maybe its an Australian thingor maybe its just a cultural thing, not sure

Fully agree!! I did something slightly different re the dress though I found a site and chose the colour and length The girls chose what style they wanted but I said I'd contribute $100 to the dress and they could pay the difference depending on the cost/style they chose The least one contributed was $13 and the most was $57 (NZD) so luckily $100 wasn't like 30 off the original price

Always so helpful, Cavin! I know in my experience as a bridesmaid, I was always expected to purchase my own dress, but it was not ridiculously expensive either time I could see it making sense for the bride to purchase the dress if it was an extremely expensive dress! Or I could also see purchasing one bridesmaid dress for a specific bridesmaid who is undergoing financial hardships, etc I’m sure if you’ve surrounded yourself with loving and supportive people, the other bridesmaids would be understanding of exceptions like that!
