well thanks a lot for making this, very insightful Comment from : Francisco Matos |

Yeah I make a big chunk of my (much smaller than yours) income on kickstarter but it is the least passive income ever 😂 soooo much work! Wish there were cons here that were as big on art as you have over there (uk ones seem to either be tiny or massive mainstream marvel type affairs) Comment from : Art By Emily Hare |
I bet your hotel costs could be meaningfully reduced if you offered prints/merchandise to fans/supporters in different cities for hosting you during trips to events! I know you mentioned you were an introvert, but I bet it would lead to upsells and other opportunities for you Comment from : Reid Hendrick |
lol, "your OC is trash" - appreciate this upfront look at your experience since my vision of success involved consistent commissions as opposed to conventions! Thank you, this will help me become a more well rounded professional artist 🙏 Comment from : Reid Hendrick |
thank you, im trying to do this in my country Comment from : Silver |

I only recently found your youtube channel and I couldn't be happier Not only do yo present and explain in a clear well understood manner, but it's interesting and thought provoking Now I'm an old old artist I went to Art School in the early eighties All I have to say is keep up the good work and thanks for the efforts! Comment from : Michael Simmons |
I'm shocked at your travel costs! I always wondered how people justify travelling large distances to do conventions Man, what a huuuggeee gamble Comment from : TheNerdArmory |
5:57 how'd you make half of the kickstarter money if the kickstarter money has to also pay for materials? You had you partner be the one to pay for materials instead? XD Comment from : TheNerdArmory |
Holy Wow Finally someone who has given me hope to keep going and follow my dream after a lifetime of other paths Thank you so much for posting your Gross Earnings Any way you could post your Net Earnings after expenses? So for me, I'm still building my skills so I'm a long way off before I can go to a convention and hope to profit But the kicker you've provided is how you built your audience through conventions I'm so happy to hear that conventions are working for you I'm going to reprioritize my consideration for conventions Comment from : robSHEPart |
thanks for sharing numbers Comment from : Spotkaj Maxa |
I recognise and commend your hardwork as well as skill but strongly disagree against the use of the word 'artist' here, the art world is completley different to thisconventions don't exist for artists, over-producing editions is frowned upon, gallery representation is not "wholesale", the art world is probably the most competitive industry alongside Fashion Artists such as Sterling Ruby, Marina Abramovic, or Tom Sachs and Galleries such as Gagosian, MoMA, Whitney, Tate, David Zwirner or Hauser and Wirth all behave very differently to the illustration world Artists face a complete different landscape to this one Comment from : New Romantics |
Very good videobrIt sucks that you have to be a businessman if u want to survive as an artist I'm really bad at it and it exhaustes me to the core Comment from : Depression Of My Cat |

Thank you for sharing At least your expenses are a tax write off I think doing conventions are also like “advertising” because your work is out in the world and people get a chance to know you too People buy from who they know and like Great video! ❤ Comment from : L L |
Hey man, your video is very informative I feel like for me my biggest downfall is I have a super low self esteem I have made an effort to self promote and I end up getting discouraged and upset with myself I start to doubt my abilities because of the lack of little positive feedback in my life I assume your extremely busy and cannot respond, but If anyone knows of a way to help me with this I would really appreciate it I'm not looking for people to say "Hey man, just get off your butt and do it" I am doing it, but the results have been pretty negative I need someone who is skilled and willing to evaluate my work and give me a direction to move in Comment from : Tommy Candlish |
Are you anime lover? Love it Comment from : Hello |
Thank you so much for this video and your transparency I also make most of my income through conventions, and a huge chunk of my revenue goes into expenses You have my sympathy!! 😂Your art is so good, by the way! Not surprised you're doing great :) Comment from : Jess Was Here |

Really insightful ! Thank you for this video ! Comment from : Ssparda |
Great video! It would be really interesting to get a similar breakdown of time management I'm very interested in how you balance the time to create new work vs the time to deal with the promotion and business side Going to all those cons must be very tiring and time consuming! Comment from : Simon Cowell |
Dude, you busted your butt off to get where you are You deserve the success I think this video will help a lot of artist with financial expectation, especially the hidden expenses Comment from : Otterpro |
Hello there!, artist here too, working for Paizo/Pathfinder RPG Thank you for this sobering view of your business 240k on the thumbnail sounded clickbaity, and it was, but in a good way, you really explained all the related expenses, and that is key Besides your presentation is clear and fun, I absolutely suck at self-promotion, and learned a ton from this Thank you again Comment from : Luis Salas Lastra |
Thank you for this video and the realistic look at expenses Comment from : OptoMix |

Hey, considering Some of the most profitable businesses are lucky to make 40 profit margins, and you made 50 profit margin on your convention costs alone, You are kicking some serious ass as an artist Especially considering the starving artist trope my Dad's always trying to brainwash me with 😂😂 Comment from : SmokeandSpirits |
Dope breakdown but what about taxes? Comment from : Animative Space |
Hello! Thanks for the video and transparency I know it can be scary to share personal info but as a small artist that still only dreams of making that much money it is very helpful to see the work and costs involved I just started doing local markets and they are very hit and miss so it made me question how ppl make a living selling art… I haven’t considered doing a con because the costs seemed so high for me I wondered how anyone can make a profit! But good to know they can be profitable 😁 Comment from : OneKai ToRuleThemAll |
I believe it's equally important to see the figures from conventions as it is to see that you included commissions at $0 😂😂 Comment from : Smiley Warhead |

this was super helpful I would've thought I had to grow an audience before going to a con but its nice to know you can grow from them You're right about knowing what kind of people show up to a con I was at mocca fest last year and while the fineart and comics were doing fine, the anime artists seemed to be struggling unless they had put their own flair on it Comment from : Laura Blevins |
You bring a whole new meaning to "con-artist" 😆 Comment from : Icee |

I have a question, where do you find art fairs and conventions to expose your work? I'm interested in participating in one but I don't know where to start Comment from : Fuzzy Bee Films |
Yeah, but you're a wizard, Harry Muggles like us can't make 240k in a year as artists Comment from : Karlis B |
Loved the video! Its so strange for me though to hear you make so much on conventions but I believe its the difference from US to Scandinavia who has much smaller cons I'm having an art-stand this weekend and I dont even expect to even go in surplus, but its mainly because I enjoy being part of the cosplay/anime/art scene It gives me hope to when I will be having art-stands overseas though!brbrThanks for the video Comment from : Red-Sensei |
>_>; No commissions? I gotta skill up to that level cause that KILLS my vibe everytime Comment from : SpookyTr3 |

Will you make a video about structuring your business in Florida? I've heard a lot of conflicting information about digital sales (like Patreon), like you don't need any licenses unless you're selling physical goods to Florida residents and an LLC isn't necessary I've talked to art business lawyers/small business association/and the chamber of commerce, but they aren't helpful because they're not familiar with online content creation Is there a good resource for all of that? Comment from : Junjae |
Paying 60k in student loan debt in one year is crazy Good on you man Comment from : hopscotch |

No wonder why he makes a lot of money, he is an amazing professional, he achieved a master illustrator level, and he knows the business side His art speaks for itself, and he is 100 dedicated to his art I can tell he works really hard! I edit to say, this guy is the real deal, great illustration work, no gimmicks! Comment from : Monica B |
