Been doing carpentry for 4 years straight out of high school started 25 bucks an hour in those 4years I’ve only acquired two raises now making 275 a hour averaging 25-30hours a week after bills and taxes I take home nothing not too mention no benifits no pto there’s just 0 money in carpentry that’s why I’m in school again and leaving the trades after college

I made $40 an hour in Washington in 2018 moved to Idaho and the best offer I got was $27 in 2022 so I took an HVAC apprenticeship now I’m laid off the unemployment isn’t coming because the website is a broken government site and I’ve got my first child due in 10 weeks Carpentry is the only trade that requires skill that cuts out 80 of potential candidates right away the pay is shit because it’s more labor intensive and time consuming All the materials are garbage now so why bring the best guys on when you can get some invaders to do it half ass and only have a marginally inferior product

It is one of the few trades that actually requires skill and the pay is insanely low I literally have to take a pay cut every time I take a new job I make the same now as I did in 2008

Amazon pays roughly 25/hr That's the floor on pay in this country (I think they hire anyone with a pulse and not drugged out) Get with the program or close shop

You can make good money in mid sized towns in Canada if you get a red seal and work for yourself or a design firm Especially if people consider you one of the best from a good reputation But it really depends who you work for

I’ve been doing carpentry for over a decade now and I’ll tell you the main issue is pay Even with a journeyman card (4yrs trade school and 4000 work hours) your luck to get 27-30 an hour It’s even worse if you want to work non-commercial which is usually more fun and interesting Oh and if your expected to drywall, concrete, and light HVAC/Plumbing/Electrical work

As a sub teacher kids want easy work now days and better pay, not working in cold winter or hot summers Fall and spring is fine brMy Father was a carpenter and builder in Memphis Tn for many many years but developed a hernia from lifting all his heavy tools But I used to help him during the summer sometimes and roofing was horrible during those times He loved it though

It's true I use to help build apartments carpenters have it the worst they do the hardest bring in 2 by 12s 2by 6s and 2 by 4s hitting the road at 6am coming home almost 8pm Its way easier to be electronian or a plummer so who wouldn't

Carpentry schools simply need an update I did 15 years in woodshop and 2 years on site When I graduated, I had never touched any moldings, hung a door, or even cut drywall If you gave me 35 years with an aspiring carpenter, he would be worth $35-50/hr fresh out of high school at 17-18 years old That would solve the biggest dillema It's very difficult to pay a new guy more than $15-20/hr to watch and learn Customers aren't willing to invest in the next generation of carpenters and they really shouldn't have to, if schools were spitting out real carpenters instead of whatever I was at graduation

As someone who’s been doing this the last five years, I understand why many don’t wanna work or have left, a lot of people work with assholes in carpentry that constantly shit on the new guy! I work in Canada and boy I tell ya that amount of low life’s and psychos I’ve met doing carpentry is amazing People with No English who have been living here for decades, alcoholics, ex cons and your regular con-artists that are in positions of authority! The environment is poisonous, and many people leave, I had a buddy of mine who I started out with quit because he was tired of being shitted on by different assholes and chasing people for money they owed him You don’t feel rewarded most of the time and you constantly are screwed around with and made to feel like shit! It’s low level crap and people don’t wanna destroy their health anymore!

I was an apprenticing carpenter, years ago I jumped ship before I even became a journeyman for CS workbrbrI make almost 400k annually I barely do actual work anymore If I were a carpenter, I wouldn't clear 6 figures in the same area Why would I work a hard, manual job for nothing when I could be telling morons how to run their cybersecurity procedures instead?

I've worked in carpentry for decades , low pay and no insurance is the problem ! We've been forced to be subcontractors and essentially work in a non-insured profession that is prone to be highly hazardous ! Why work in that type of business if you dont get the pay you deserve and if you get hurt you're stuck with the bill and cant work , the contractors just replace you with the next unskilled guy who he under pays and overworks Greedy ungrateful contractors are the real problem !
