We have found copper coins up to 300 years old and when the are lost with minimal wear, they stand up to the acidic soil in NE much better than heavily worn ones My theory is the newly minted coins are work-hardened from the striking process This phenomenon is known to those who hammer out brass and copper items I have one Indian head penny that came out with a high level of detail after carefully scraping away the dirt and hard coating It was like new when it was lost yet it retained its detail Same with a George the first farthing Amazing Work hardened metal Once it’s worn away, it’s gone Comment from : @skip4348 |

I just ran across this video and I'll add something for that particular coin - during the particular time period when it was minted, the US mint was having difficulty obtaining a higher grade of copper for large cents and half cents In other words, the metal as received had a great deal of contaminants in it, not being as pure as it should have been, but this was all they could obtain during that time period, perhaps due to faulty smelting by the supplier Anyway, the copper coins minted during the 18-teens almost always look rough, regardless of grade because not only did the contaminants in the metal cause more reactivity with the various substances that they came into contact with, and this would especially be true for those coins that became buried in the ground, but also did not strike as well and you rarely come across coins struck during those years in the higher grades Pitting is quite common Your comment about soil Ph is particularly relevant for such coins Comment from : @jamesbuccigross6920 |

Thanks for posting your videos I enjoy them Hot peroxide is what are use microwave your peroxide for about a minute throw your copper coins in, heated peroxide accelerates the process It really does work miracles Now you’re coin has to have detail to begin with After the hot peroxide process and some light circular rubbing with #000 extra fine steel wool, I dip my coins in meted candlewax rub them down leaving some wax on them Hairdryer that for a shiny finish believe me it works if I could post pictures I’d show you before and after ‘s I do this to all my large cents and British coppersbrbrFYI instead of expensive Andres pencils buy bamboo skewers and sharpen them in the pencil sharpener Comment from : @andrewpaulmarussich7180 |
|
I know what you mean by some soils preserve better Here in Montana many of the the v nickels or buffalos can occasionally come out still silver in color I've had wheat pennies come out a bright copper color like they were just dropped I think heavily fertilized places like farmer's fields tend to destroy coins more Neat tip Comment from : @DirtyMoneymetaldetecting |

I've used peroxide for years on copper and bronze coins It often works well at removing dirt, especially when the base metal of the coin is in tact The only down side is that it will darken the patina Comment from : @cladhopper41 |

It does work Best when slighly warm I've floated a small glass bowl with some 2 H2O2 solution in a larger bowl of hot water Dropped button in the H202 bowl Design finally came out Do not do this on guilt buttons it will eat up the coating Comment from : @metaldetectingthenortheast1294 |
