Following on from a previous video about famous photographers I picked up a copy of Masters of Photography by Reuel Golden for £350 This book features photographs from 55 photographers many of which you have spoken about Totally agree that getting books is a better investment to learn Many thanks for the inspiration yet again 😃 Comment from : @tduke91 |
Now you mention it, I'm sure I was aware of the Famous Photographers course back in the 1970's, however, being a poor student (not photography) I couldn't afford it I suspect I really don't remember anything more about it, further than what you mentioned I still have my 24 volume Dixon's World of Photography Library which I found on eBay in the UK and had sent to Australia, and the 18 volume Time-Life Life Library of Photography All older publications from around the 1970-80's and full of good stuff Comment from : @chrisgrylls9132 |

This is still the only channel on youtube I am subscribed for Thank you Comment from : @cosmin-yt |
This channel is like if Alan Watts talked about photography People get far too stuck on technology and techniques Comment from : @billybanter9573 |
I feel a little bit guilty watching this video, while looking at my RF 85 DS lens on the shelf Anyway, I recently start borrowing books about paintings from the local library Enjoy reading them Comment from : @fengwang3389 |
Love it Alex And if you do spend money on equipment, buy used from a reputable source You can buy flagship camera models from just a few years ago at a fraction of the cost Comment from : @robertgretter9452 |
Hi Alex I was wondering if you have any tips on curating your own photos I’ve been taking photos, some bad, some good and some pretty average but I’ve always struggled to identify what I feel are my own best photos, Even what are my bad photos This can leave me in a state of not knowing what’s good or bad and inhibits me somewhat Any advice would be great Thanks Comment from : @paulhaybyrne |
the pic of the woman with the broom and the mop, was taken by gordon park!!!!!! Comment from : @walterjones999 |
I really like this idea I joined my local library today and borrowed Dupain's Australia and Brassai Paris Nocturne for some inspiration Way better than what's on Instagram Comment from : @manandbikeadv |
Great video I tend to check out photos on social media sites but shall certainly look to get a couple of books to try and further my photographic eye 😉 Comment from : @ivanstevens |
You should always take time to sharpen your axe Comment from : @ChiliMcFly1 |
Books have been my greatest investment I've picked up a number of great ones in local thrift shops Even got the three Ansel Adams instruction books for a excellent price Also committed to getting one photo collection book each month this year Comment from : @expeditionsinsound2202 |
If you invested in any photography gear last year you will have made money by default this year, because you can sell for more than what you paid I bought a Canon 6D for £300 You are lucky to see them used for £400 now Same as the lenses, they are going up and up I just bought a new lens which I probably won't use much, but that's okay because I can sell it for more than I bought it when I don't want it anymore Comment from : @ArcanePath360 |
The photo of a black woman holding a mop and broom against an American flag is by Gordon Parks One of the great African-American photographers Comment from : @garyvogan2790 |
I ordered the first book of the bay for $5CDN shipped to my house Comment from : @jpsuperstar |
Excellent video! Comment from : @darrenleigh201 |
I have always preferred books to to classes because they stay on your bookcase and as you improve the very good ones are a constant source of new photographic concepts The two books I constantly refer to are Light:Science and Magic by Fil Hunter and The Practice of Contemplatve Photography by Andy Karr Comment from : @imagepoint9726 |
No not Annie It's Gordon Parks and was rejected by Life magazine during Jim Crow period Comment from : @samcaple8197 |
As always, nice video with great insights, thank you Comment from : @Reason-fg4ik |
Thank you Alex 😊 Comment from : @anton0000001 |
great video as usual And so useful One of my all time favorite book is "The Photographer's Playbook" I like to just take a random page and stick to the assignment for a day :D Comment from : @ddavisuals |
Thank you so much It is so hard to find decent analysis about photography rather than videos all based around promoting gear Comment from : @manyoffers7119 |
As I’ve developed ( pardon the pun ! ) as a photographer I’ve had the most fun , with some excellent results using an old Sony Alpha 6000 and a vintage Zeiss lens ( £30 on eBay ) This combo always inspires me , I have to manually focus and take my time It’s been a really important part of the journey Ive also read a lot of photography books , looked at thousands of pictures and most importantly of all I found this wonderful channel … if I’m in a rut Alex always inspires me Not much gear chat and very often some superb insights into the whole world of photography Thanks Alex you’re a star Comment from : @GJSsongsmith |
Flickr is still a good place to find interesting photographers You have to sieve through a lot of mud to get to the gold, but it’s there Comment from : @chrispatmore8944 |
The most expensive and worthless things you could probably 'buy' are photography classes I've followed classes (not online, but like in a school environment), costing me 200 € for a few hours and I didn't learn anything I didn't already know from books or youtube, basic stuff like iso, shutterspeed, aperture, rules of thirds If you buy an expensive lens you won't use a lot, you can still sell it Comment from : @wanneske1969 |
I tried to look for your portfolio and wondered if you could share it? Comment from : @kodithebear |
Thank you, Alex You made me remember one of my first attempts at an education in photography About 20 years ago, I bought the complete "set" of lesson books from New York Institute of Photography My recollection is that I only completed about half of the projects due to some sort of distraction You reminded me I still have those lesson books, neatly stored away I'm going to get them out and revisit that program (I'm not sure, but I would think that school no longer exists) Thanks again, Alex!brbr(By the way I bought the Gregory Heisler book you recommended Wow) Comment from : @icantfindtheremote |
The best thing of buy books is that you can pick them up at any time and deep into them, if leave them on the shelf and after a year or more you open them again you can see new things Comment from : @sebastianop3052 |
I think I need a half decent tripod Comment from : @LSpencer |
I was swimming in a pool of inspiration last month Now I havent even taken a single photograph It’s very draining to me even though it is what I like doing the most Comment from : @HotMochaCake |
Loved the video, but you're going to have to eat your hat, I'm afraid The image you attributed to Annie Liebovitz was actually taken by Gordon Parks and its name is American Gothic Comment from : @JohnJohnson7777 |
As a young photographer, I constantly got lost in the world of the social media trends and am confused about what are “better photos” I have to keep reminding myself of what really means to me as a creator and what I truly love Thank you for your awesome videos and tips that always bring me back to my original passion for photography ❤️ Comment from : @mengkehsiehphoto |
Forgot to add, I really love going to the “The World Press Photo Exhibition 2022’ The photos mess with my mind Comment from : @ArchibaldMarmaduke |

So Sorry, I dont know how to simplify a story, so here is a short storybrbrGot my first kit, I learned, and 2 years later, I fell in love with Merry Alpern's, Dirty Windows set With a dslr, i did very well at trying to recreate that BnW grungy film look, and even did well placing in an amateur contest That knowledge is so valuable to me, and I wish I could meet Ms or Mrs Alpern in person someday to thank her!!!brbrAlan Schaller:brThe worst/best thing I have ever discovered in the BnW world, was Alan Schaller His work makes me feel like I should just walk over to the trash, put myself into it, and let someone come along and adopt my gear! lolbrbrDavid Dubnitskiy:brI nearly paid to go to one of his workshops, just so I could say I met the man!! His work is engrained into my brain!brbrYourself Sir & Alan Watts:brThe two of you combined, put back into balance everything that drives me within my photography universe!!!brbrPS:brIf i were local, and you had workshops, I guarantee I would be your first Bob! lol (What About Bob) LOLbrAbsolutely love your content sir; and Thank You for giving us a bit of yourself sir!! You need to combine theory and practice Comment from : @thomaseriksson6256 |

I often go in garage sales Most of the time there's nothing really interesting but sometimes you can find books you could never get in specialized stores There are happy surprises Even great photographers take their inspiration at weird sources Take a look at the Alec Soth's channel Comment from : @louhautdavid6451 |
I'm so glad I happened onto your channel a long while ago Every one of your videos delivers in so many ways Thank you for all you do! Comment from : @alanmacrae |
Alex, did you read the article in which you copied the photograph of Irvin Penn? Famous Artists School and Famous Photographers School was closed in 1974 Yale University Art Gallery (YUAG) are now digging deeper into its history
following the museum’s acquisition this month of the school’s massive archive of photographs, notes, contact sheets, teaching materials, and other documents Yale University has all of it Comment from : @tedbrown7908 |

For my personal work, my primary camera today is a Sony W-830 point-and-shoot Marvelously sharp Tessar-design zoom lens and that gorgeous Sony color So inconspicuous, too, perfect for the street images I'm after Paid $50 US for it on eBaybrbrOne doesn't always need to be lugging around $5000-$10000 in gear when out shooting Back in the day that's what I did when when shooting for clients such as Kodak and IBM I don't miss it 😎 Comment from : @ManuelRodriguez-wm2gv |
My library of favourite photographers includes Robert Frank, Steve McCurry, David Bailey, Seydou Keita, Peter Brew Bevan, Annie Leibovitz & William Egglestone Comment from : @sbai4319 |
Thanks as always for watching Did you ever get something you'd think would improve your photography and it, well it just didn't brMine was an extension tube, which basically was very expensive Canon branded air :D Comment from : @ThePhotographicEye |
