You can retire at 20 years from the air force as an E5 (Staff Sergeant) I retired as an E7 (Master Sergeant) but retiring as an E5 is frowned upon by colleagues because that shows that the person didn't study hard enough and just wanted to retire and didn't want to make it to the next rank of E6 which is more suitable In my days taking the test for E6 was a little tougher than what I expected I retired in 1997 Yes, I've known people who made E5 in their first 4 years in the AF but decided to get out Once you make E5 you will be expected to do supervisory level of management But for some people just couldn't handle the responsibility of being an E5 So they'd rather take the easy road to a discharge from the AF But I'll you, the benefits are there when you retire and it's worth it BTW, there is no such thing as a 20 year contract in the AF the way you send it in the end If you do not make E5 by your 8th year in the AF, expect to be booted out

So you had to do the work of a staph sergeant nine months before you started getting paid as that E5 rank What a SCREW JOB, as a civilian you could sue your company, BUT in the military if you complain, you get an article 15, and demoted

Dude don't worry about ALS, it is easy, just keep you uniforms straight and pay attention in class The one area just about everyone has some trouble with is the speech, but just practice that and don't try and memorize it

When I was in I enlisted for 6 yrs After all my basic aviation electronics schools I was E-4 1 1/2 yrs in Promoted to E-5 at about 3 yrs in after 2 test cycles Re upped for another 6 yrs Took the test and past it every cycle I was eligible until the end of my 2nd 6 yrs In my branch of the service (Navy) they would promote very few 1 or 2 a cycle Hard to make rank when there are 100s to choose from One of the reasons I didn't enlist again and I was a single father after my wife past When I got out I decided not to go into electronics It's good that your putting an effort in to get promoted Anything and every thing can convert over to a resume Good luck on making it through the rest of your enlistment

i thikn its cos usa needs to keep ts reservs in good enough gonditions and skilled servicemen so everybody will take the test breven if they leave couple months on the road same as in Finnish military that is fully conscript based army so all that are fysicly and mentally tested and passed will go to underofficer school and some off those will go reserofficer school so every 6-12 months there will be 2 patches off new officers and underofficers

You can decline testing but you won't be able to reenlist but most people don't want to cut off that option so it's easier to get the day off before take the test and leave your options open
