I've worked in the same industry for over 20 years I've never seen hard work get anyone promoted Hard workers are necessary, they know their station, but they never get promoted The ones who get promoted are as you say, visible, and also intellectually curious They know the business, not just their own role

Do not underestimate visibility It's probably the biggest lesson I have taken from my most recent job I was up for promotion and on paper my performance was almost double that of another candidate But he had visibility to the leadership team and they knew his name I didn't get it It's an important lesson, you have to sell yourself or the work you are doing will go unnoticed

Visibility is key but I have seen remote workers get promoted as well, so I think sometimes you can't better yourself because the company structure is opaque or you are not close enough to the people who have the authority
