Do I have use HR against my boss? She was upset I had signed up for a one-person shift The manager below her rank (a 24/25-year-old man) is supposed to organize and keep an eye on who works which shifts on the schedule Our boss scolded him for not noticing I had signed up to go solo for a coffee service, I believe When she asked him if she thought I could do the shift, I answered for him with a firm "yes," because I felt belittled by her She said she didn't think so, was all "I've told you not to sign up for shifts by yourself, I've been very clear about that, I don't know how much clearer I can get for you to listen" (something like, that, so I'm not perfectly quoting her), and she told me I need someone there to give me instructions and guide me That was very insensitive and harsh, and I think that if she said that to a person with a learning disability, they would be hurt and deem her a bigot I should've told her that, to make a point to her about tact Can I go to HR for this? Comment from : John Rainsman |

I have an undergraduate degree in Psychology A psych degree coupled with HR work experience suffices a HRM degree in my opinion I find that a HR certificate from an accredited college, or SHRM/HRCI certification would be best in lieu of a undergraduate or graduate degree It saves time, money, and is specific to what you and/or your employer is looking for Comment from : SI R |

Sorry for saying this but the reason why I decided to pursue this degree is because of TOBY from the Office Like seriously Not because of how he constantly gets mistreated by Michael Scott, but because of the job title and the way he manages in all those years in the office Almost 60 of the people in the state where I live choose Amazon, Boeing, Fedex, etc The rest is in retails + restaurant services I just fell in love with this career after an assignment in college success class I will not regret this no matter how hard or challenging it is I've spent nearly 9 years in retails and seriously I'm amazed that I havent kicked the bucket yet Comment from : JKs Haven |

I am thinking about getting my MHRM or MBA I was in the military for a few years so, thankfully, I have great options I'm entitled to 150 free hours at any public university/college since I enlisted in Texas brbrI'm thankful that I have 150 hours to use as I please I already have a bachelor's so I will probably get more than one advanced degree and transfer the remaining hours to my daughter brbrAlso, I'm an HR Specialist with the federal government I came in as a GS-9/11/12career ladder position I just started back in November Always be on the lookout for jobs that are open to the general public As well, I came in under the HR STAR Trainee Program brbrLots of HR and other opportunities with the federal government and other entities I did HR with the Department of Corrections and social servicesthe state jobs had a lower salary but, it still worked out for me 🙂🙂 In everything give thanks 😊 Comment from : Christina |

Based on some comments, it makes sense why many HR teams are horrible lol Also it seems many people are only focused on some part of hr, the one "easy" to get into Meanwhile many specialized jobs fall into HR and typically only hire HR graduate Comment from : Emileigh |

I think a HRM degree by itself is okay, but if earning is what you want, you can add to it Adding CIPD would get you on the way to chief people officer which would earn 116-333k per year in ireland for example Comment from : Lisa Verweij |

I absolutely love Human Resources field There are two colleges in India called as Tata Institute of Social Sciences and XLRI which provides Master's in HR and the degree and the skills they provide is world-class They have the best Placements and Alumni Network in top MNCs of the world In the US the MA in HRM from Texas A&M, University of Minnesota and Cornell HRM course is great My dream is to pursue Master's in HR from any of these highly esteemed Institutions 👍😊 Comment from : Soumya Roy |

Forgot HR Generalist which is above a Specialist and an HR Business Partner which is above a Generalist Thanks for doing this video but there’s a lot of key missing information We don’t fire everyone one either btw, we consult managers and advise them and minimize risk The most accurate piece of information provided here was they must know “a ton of labor law”…that part is true Comment from : ElizabethKCALS7702 |

I loved your video however can you update it based on the SHRM certification ? Does the certification make a difference in the salary rate? Does a masters degree also make a difference in the salary rate? What corporations are in the best interest of the HR Manager in reference to salary, and political view? Good video! It’s hard for an introvert HR Pro like me but I managebrbrJust a tip for the new HR grads! Networking will help you get your first HR job My first HR job was as an generalist with a small company where I had to do everything HR related So I had experience with all HR areas I connected and networked with the owner a year before they offered me a job Comment from : Ian Hopfe the HR Pro |
|
The statement on “don’t necessary need an Hr degree”, let me clarify the following If you have a psychology degree you will face more difficulties to get your first job experience than if you have an HR degree Why? Because, HR degree has specific courses that teach you in depth the technicalities of the field In psychology you learn behavior but not compensation, benefits, staffing, etc however, I do agree with your statement on double majoring In terms of double majoring you can still pair HR with many options not only psychology Comment from : L1ghtAlch3mist |

Folks, first of all please understand something: There is no such thing as human resource management That moniker is one of the biggest misnomers ever bestowed on a business department If it should be called anything it should be called company protection management brbrThey tagged it the namesake “human resource management” to it to make employees feel like they are highly valued in their skill set and the company is there for you Well my friends, I hate to pop your bubble but I’ve been out of business college for over 25 years and I’m here to tell you that’s a load of bovine excrement! brWhenever the feces hits the fan the people in “human resource management“ immediately spring into action and start formulating a plan to protect the company and all of its assets, employees be damned! In today’s corporate world you are just another number and I promise you if you all of a sudden dropped dead the opening to replace you at your job will be up faster than your obituary will Comment from : Phayzyre105 |

I graduated with a BBA in HRM in fall 2020 The population where I live is pretty small so it’s really hard to find a job in HR And all the entry level HR jobs I’ve seen require 3 years minimum of HR experience like how the hellI’m currently stuck applying for entry level banking and front desk jobs I guess I won’t find a job in HR until I move to a different state which I plan on doing because the jobs suck here I also plan on getting my aPHR certification so I hope it will help me land a job Comment from : Jeanelle |

I’m about to graduate with a degree in history but I am very interested in HR I did 4 years in the Marines I developed customer service and leadership skills while I served and I also have 12 business credits (3 of which are from an HR management class) Does anyone have any advice? Will I have a hard time ever getting into HR? Comment from : Troy Phillips |
|
“Great for the right person” I wouldn’t advise doing a bachelors in this degree and would instead suggest doing a masters in it and only if you get into a great program like OSU, Pepperdine, UIUC or university of Minnesota These schools all set you up for immediate success and the average starting pay is already higher than the average mid career if you start working in the field post bachelors Comment from : Pixel |

I’m a business school professor focusing on HR, and I think this video does a great job of condensing the pros and cons of HR as a career Nice work! brbrOne thing I will point out is that, while it’s true that (1) you can get into HR without an HR degree, and (2) an HR degree is narrow in scope compared to some other business degrees, we have found that masters-level HR graduates are highly sought after for leadership development programs in many companies This accelerates their career and puts them in those high paying management level roles within a few years after graduating That kind of career acceleration is much less likely with a non-HR degree Especially when paired with an MBA (we offer both degrees within two years), alumni climb the corporate HR ladder pretty quickly Comment from : Chris Hartwell |

I have been an HR professional for more than 14 years, and I think you hit the jackpot with your red flag about the HRM degree not being a requirement for an HR job I'm a hospitality management graduate, and the second job I landed was in HR as an administrator, which is a very common starting point for those shifting into an office-based career I would double down on your comment to major in something different and have a minor in HR; this should give you enough credibility to practice HR while not restricting you to HR only careersbrbrOne word of caution for the idealists out there, if you're getting an HR degree and getting into an HR career because you want to make a difference, this is the hardest part of the job Consider the following:brbr- The more junior your position is, the less impact you can have on the decisions you think would negatively impact the people's culture In this case, your role might be focused mostly on damage control and putting off fires, both of which can become very draining, exhausting, and stressfulbrbr- When you're in the middle management spot, you start getting some empowerment to make decisions This varies depending on the structure of the organization you're in An HR Manager in an SME might have a strong say on how the organizational culture and people matters work; however, the same role in a larger organization might be in this weird spot of having real empowerment in operational matters but negligible to zero influence on the big strategic decisions that might make it or break it This is something fundamental to consider for emotional people as you might find yourself in a spot where you are forced to execute decisions or follow practices that you don't believe in and contradict the values of the organization or your own personal values Still, you would be expected to own these decisions and practices and enforce them with high-level ownership that would make you the subject of constant flacking and give you a bad reputation in addition to some serious internal conflictbrbr- Finally, when you get to the top, and depending on how healthy or unhealthy your organizational leadership culture might be, this is where you have to become an extremely talented politician to successfully navigate your days If you have an amazing leadership culture, getting a lead HR role will be like reaching Nirvana If you have moderate culture, it should pose a good challenge and get extremely satisfying when you succeed in making positive changes However, if you have a toxic culture at the top (think House of Cards), the job can become extremely draining and stressful You will have the option to either stand for what you believe in and get into constant confrontations with the leadership or compromise and focus on the most critical decisions that might be deal-breakers and let go of others, ie, choose your battles very carefully Alternatively, you might find yourself going full-on Kevin Spacey, and decide whether this is for youbrbrThat said, if you have built a network of strong organizational allies who can be influential where you need them and nurtured these relationships, you are off to much better results and a very satisfying career Comment from : Yamen Zein |
